Title: New Allotment... what can I grow now?
Post by: bigdumbird on September 11, 2008, 14:06:29
Hello
I have been lucky enough to obtain a well looked after allotment.

The ground is clear and ready but what can I grow now?

I could make a cloche out of bits and pieces to protect seedlings.

I also plan to put aquadulce in on 5th Nov

Thanks

You could prepare the ground for over wintering beans.  You could sow:  Radish,  Winter lettuce,  Overwintering Spring Onions,  Overwintering Onion sets.

You may get away with planting young plugplants of spring caulis and spring cabbages.

Winter Radish and cold tolerant carrots can be added to that list, as can Winter Vetch and Field Beans as green manures to be turned in in Spring..

Here are some delicious items you can sow during September:

Chinese Cabbage
Corn Salad (Lamb's Lettuce)
Garlic/Wild
Japanese Onions
Land Cress
Mustard
Onion seed
Quick Heading Calabrese
Salad Leaves
Spinach
Spring Cabbage (NOW!)
Spring Onions (winter hardy)
Turnip
Winter Radish

And into October:

Leek
Kale (grown under cover)
Cauliflower All Year Round

Oh, all right then, November as well:

(for early crops next year)
Broad beans
Peas

Not much to do then.

;D

Hey there someone else with a new platch.  I've planted a couple of apple trees and raspberry bushes today and am looking to start cabbabe, peas and over winter stuff but don't really have a clue what types to set out.  I'd welcome any information really.  Hope you all had a good day on yours ;D ;D ;D
