we have filled both freezers and still have lots and lots of runner beans!
apart from leaving them to dry for next year does any one know of any recipes we can use them in please??
we have a soup one but nothing else.
thanks Steve
Runner Bean Relish?
In a preserving pan, simmer for 20 minutes:
1.5 lb diced onions
0.5 pints malt (or spiced) vinegar
Trim & slice (I cut them into thickish chunks) 2 lb runner beans; par-boil & drain.
Add to the onions.
Mix together:
1.5 oz cornflour
1 heaped tablespoon mustard powder
1 rounded tablespoon turmeric
a little vinegar
Add that as well, plus 8 oz dark brown sugar & half a pint of vinegar.
Stir everything together until dissolved, then simmer for an hour or two, adding more vinegar as necessary. (It doesn't mulch down like a traditional chutney, but it does thicken & gel.)
Originally a Delia recipe (Just in case her lawyers are getting ready to sue!), but I received it third-hand & it's obviously gone through a few changes. Which means it's a good recipe!!
PS - Anyone know how I print "half", ie. 1/2 (but proper) instead of "0.5"? Don't do metric. Tim?
really good used as a substitute for spaghetti with tom sauce and Halloumi (not sure about spelling!)cheese, add to lots of different soups and freeze never tried the relish but looks good failing this find a local luncheon club or retirement home who would be chuffed to be the recipient of your generosity!
Sorry, Trevor - wish I knew!
Trevor_D, you type your recipe in MS Word. Using the insert symbol you use the fractions. I've customised the fractions so that to insert a quarter I type cntrl14, a half is cntrl12, and three quarters is cntrl34. You then cntrla to highlight the lot and press copy. You then come onto this site, open the page you want to post in, and press paste. (You may well have to right click to get the paste option).
I hope that makes sense.
Having customised the fractions in word, it doesn't work on here. ;D

Thanks! Sounds easy. I'll try it when I've got a bit more time.
