like i said before: yep I'm up for the yard long beans challenge. had lovely healthy plants at the beginning of the season, i planted them out at the beginning of June and bam!! the weather changed to really cold nights and somewhat coolish days for about 2 weeks on a trot, they suffered and died about 3 weeks after :'(. but like a moth to the flame i will try again next year for sure :D.

Got my seeds from a garden center, and like Thifasmom, mine were looking good, then deadish, then 2 very long beans appeared..and then they really died...dead.

in Trinidad we call them bodi and they are a true bean belongs to the legume family you eat the whole thing pod and all, lovely in a curry or stewed with fresh tomatoes which is seasoned with lots of fresh herbs, yum  :D

Thompson and Morgan who pack and distribute them say they can be eaten raw and as I said they say it is not a true bean.

I trust they know what they are talking about. :)

maybe they do, maybe i don't, but from what i can see of all the pictures of the plant and pod, it looks very much like the plant i know and it was classed as a bean when i did agriculture during highschool and the actual seed is definitely bean like, but hey whatever maybe botanically its not the same genre as beans, hopefully next year I'll get a crop to harvest and be able to see for myself if it is the same plant. and though they advice that it can be eaten raw, i never liked the taste of it raw, but i know some who do.

just did a bit of surfing and they are distantly related to beans according to wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yardlong_bean (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yardlong_bean)
so probably distantly enough not to be classed as a true bean :-\.
