Right this year the blight has been bad again. I am trying to map out which were the most badly affected areas.
So
- Where are you growing?
- What did it hit, tomatoes &/ potatoes?
- If tomatoes were affected, were they inside or outside?
So I will go first:
- No blight this year for me, so far :) 05/09/08.
- I'm in Maidstone, Kent.
- I grew early potatoes and outdoor tomatoes.
St Albans, Hertfordshire.
Blight in my outdoor tomatoes, hit at the end of August.

No blight on potatoes...........final lifting few weeks ago.
However my neighbour across our close has Blight on his outdoor tomatoes,no blight on his hanging basket tomatoes hanging by his front door.
I gave him the hanging basket, tumbling toms, and I have only grown tumbling toms this year, could it be they are more blight resistant.???
• No blight this year for me, so far.

Hi Dukie - where are you in Hampshire??? ???
East Finchley, North London. Blight hit my outdoor tomatoes in last week of August, although Ferline was more resistant to it than other varieties. It did not affect my potatoes.
West London, no blight on tats or toms.

Blight on outdoor tomatoes last week of August (picked unripe ones and these are now in greenhouse ripening - a few since noticed to have blight so have discarded these)
We've had blight warnings for our area this week but my potatoes (earlies, put in as a 'second sowing' at the end of June) appear to be ok.
thanks everyone so far the chart i am doing is coming along beautifully. keep the data coming :)

We have blight here on the allotment, but not at home in back garden.

I would say about a month ago-unfortunately I hadnt realised what it was until I saw a picture on one of the threads here asking others what was wrong with their toms.. so only destroyed plant last week.
Our Potatoes went last week.

Hi,
my potatos got blight on leaves a few weeks ago - leaves cut off pots seem ok so far.
outdoor tomatoes got blight on leaves last week

Lincoln - outdoor toms and potatoes - beginning to middle of August. Potato yield not significantly affected, toms a right off and were heavily laden with green fruit - have ripened some off the plant but they are insipid and tasteless!

what has it affected?
Hi
I am in Ayrshire and main crop potatoes just got hit. Toms in greenhouse are fine but not ripening very fast :(.
Meg
So far, so good, it's the first time in 9 years that I haven't had blight. Now I've said it it'll come! ;D All my toms are grown outdoors, but this year have tried a dozen or so plants under a debris netting tunnel too to see if it made a difference.
Normally blight comes here third week in August regular as clockwork, last year it hit us badly in July.
Had a fair few tomatoes reddening, but am now taking them in green (as long as they're big and shiny) cos I can't stand the thought of losing the crop this year. They seem to be ripening up well indoors and I haven't noticed a serious deterioration in taste.
oxfordshire 2nd week in august, gack garden toms fine
Baldock, Hertfordshire
Outdoor toms got hit early/middle August :'(
Spuds other side of path still growing fine ??? ;D
Greenhouse toms still fine (touch wood)
hi everyone the map is coming along beautifully and would love more markers, so please keep the info rolling in thanks again for posting.
Tadcaster, North Yorkshire- outdoor toms ruined mid August, spuds not affected.

Pots ok, stored weeks ago
All toms except Ferline blighted mid August
Exeter, Devon
Early blight on potato leaves end of June. Sprayed with bordeaux (and toms as precaution) Potatoes harvested early, (maincrop end of July) . A good sized crop, which appears to be ok and storing well so far. Blight started in earnest in July on the whole of the allotment site on potatoes and spreading to outdoor tomatoes. I have been spraying my tomatoes regularly with Dithane from about the middle of July and they are more or less ok, with just the odd leaf showing signs of blight, which has been picked off and binned. Lots of green tomatoes but very slow to ripen, even though they are supposed to be early (Red Alert and SubArctic plenty!) Anyone on the site who hasn't sprayed lost more or less all their tomatoes by August! The same thing happened this year, so I was determined to get some crop this year, even if it meant chemical warfare! I am also growing Fantasio, but haven't noticed much difference in resistance. I have picked lots of green tomatoes for chutney and stir fries, and some are ripening on the windowsill. Only a couple have turned brown so far. I have found the taste of those that have ripened rather disappointing this year so far, and a bit "woolly" in texture, but at least I have something!

For the first time in over 30 years I sprayed mine with a copper based fungicide-no sign at all (Lincs)
If Inever appear again you will know that was not wise ;)
Can I still spray now? Mine are blight free at the mo. I'd like them to stay that way!
I sprayed mine again today. You should be ok, just remember to check on the instructions how long you have to wait before picking. I picked some more before I sprayed to keep me going. Bordeaux isn't working for me at the moment, so I have graduated to the hard stuff - dithane. I didn't want to, and thought long and hard, but it was either that or lose everything again! Another tip - the sprays are only preventative, so if you do notice any leaves with blight its a good idea to take off the whole shoot, to try and stop it spreading.
Good luck!
KittyKatt
Will do! Thanks for the tip! Now I do believe I have bordeaux and dilthane ...question is where? ::) ::) ???
We're in South West Wiltshire: potatoes blighted in June; sprayed with Dithane and rescued most of them; moderate to good crop.
Tomatoes in greenhouse - one mile away from the lottie - was struck by blight in July. Lost two thirds of my plants: all beef tomatoes (Cuor di Bue), usually my pride and joy, went within a couple of days; the 10 passata tomato plants (San Marzano) produced no more than a handful of pitiful fruit; the cherry tomatoes (Principe Borghese) survived; I moved them outdoors (despite night time temperatures dipping) and we have been picking about 4 - 5 cherries a day. A humbling experience.

hi amphibian, nice to meet another maidstone dweller, do you have an allotment or do you garden at home. i garden at home as there is a very long waiting list at the allotment closest to me, which is in Loose.
Keep well thifasmom.
We are in Bedford.
Blight has wiped out our outdoor toms on allotment, first noticed around August 30th. Potatoes are OK, but I am growing Sarpo which are blight resistant and Cara which also does well.
I got blight on my lotty tomatoes (Tamina first, then SubArctic Plenty) about 30th Aug. The Sungold were not affected, nor were my early spuds (the foliage had died down before the blight came)

Allotment outdoor tomatoes were hit in last week of August but tomatoes in my garden were not - they were coming along very well. Now, as of today, the garden tomatoes have been hit too. Drat, dash, d**n and darnation. :(
Greenhouse tomatoes hit in SW London last week of August and now thoroughly destroyed though a reasonable crop before this for most of the smaller non-plum tomatoes.
Potatoes all OK....

Only grow outdoor tomatoes - got blight first week in September. Have been spraying with bordeaux mixture every couple of weeks since July.
Not sure about my potatoes grown very nearby - they all died back very early (July), well before blight arrived on tomatoes, but did not look like blight and the tubers are fine. So am saying no blight on spuds, just wierd behaviour probably due to the weather.
My neighbour's toms are all dead as of today and I don't think they sprayed with anything.

We're currently full, but the one next to me must be available soon, it is now just a sea of bindweed and I haven't seen anyone there for months. Their pumpkins have grown right across the path and onto my plot.
Lovely site, but is quite stony, full of ragstone, and has quite a bindweed issue, but then I'm in a bit being brought back into cultivation after ten years fallow.
Blight now nearly across the board in the garden and allotment. Noticed a neighbour at the allotment had very badly blighted toms he hadn't bothered to clear. (Will have words when I next see him).
Have cut plum tomato vine and hung upside down under the pergola in a probably vain attempt to get some to ripen.
had a bit of blight in my greenhouse toms here in sunny wigan (not)!, 6 plants went down with it, but the other 8 seem fine for now. fingers crossed!

stony and full of bindweed sounds like my garden ;) but i have finally started to win against the bindweed, but the stones are never ending >:(.
though i have no blight yet!! my neighbour who also has outdoor tomatoes has some blight as of last week he stripped and disposed of the leaves and only had to dispose of one whole plant the others seem to be holding their own and the fruits are still ripening beautifully. so cross everything hope it doesn't blow my way as my fruits are ripening at a slower rate, but i am still picking 3 to 5 per day.
mine were first hit in august.
0utdoor planted in the ground, mixed varieties, went down with blight in July :(
Outdoor in pots succumbed at the end of August :'(
But so far GH OK
oh I'm in Doncaster by the way
thanks for the info guys
Barnsley, South Yorkshire
Outdoor toms at allotment, but so far none at home or in greenhouse. Some blighted potatoes were left unattended in a neighbouring plot so this didn't help.
Lost all tomatoes - mainly Roma.
X
got me weeks ago here in the valleys, most of the greenhouse toms went as the result of a leaking roof and the Anya pots got it , had blight resistant pots mainly this year from T&M ( we lost the lot last year :(}and even a couple of them caught (markies I think they were) but the others were fine
We are in Harrow, growing tomatoes outside on the lottie. Mine were hit in the middle of August and I kept taking leaves off and taking out badly affected plants hoping against hope that I would get a crop. In the event only the small tomatoes like gardeners delight ripened, I pulled all the remaining plants out at the weekend. There were pounds and pounds of big tomatoes but all of them had to be thrown away.
On the other hand, the beans have been marvellous.
Update on my earlier post, blight hit Upshire, Esssx, 12th Sep, south west side of site hit first, all outdoor plants.
As of 16th the north & east side is only just seeing signs.
Meant to add, potatoes not affected as they are all up now anyway.
Plymouth Devon,
All outdoor toms from early august when i first noticed blight. All types.Came into G/H and hit 3plants, i used rainwater for watering.
I found this interesting (although others might not :) ) but in London, according to Blightwatch (potato blight monitors), Chiswick W6 which is immediately north of the Thames had far fewer Smith Periods than we did immediately south of the river in SW13 & SW15. ???
i have also found it interesting, which is why i am gathering the info, purely out of curiosity. here is an update on the blight map info and accompanying table.

may i ask what month did you lose them and i would like to say i am sorry to hear of your loss 200 plants that would completely level me emotionally me thinks :-\.
well i finally got it :( but thank god for the fair weather we have been blessed with since the weekend cause i think it will help to slow things down. i only had to remove some leaves from two infected plants and sacrificed three green tomatoes to the frying pan. as a precaution i removed some other leaves from other plants and made sure to clean secateurs between each cut. so now its the final count down to the meltdown :-\ :-X :'(.
It occurred to me today that there must be a few pockets around the coast where blight is rarer, due to prevailing winds. For instance Brighton is the home of many of the UK's remaining Elms, simply because the high hills behind and the wind generally coming up to the channel, means windbourne diseases to not normally reach it from other parts of Britain or from the continent. I presume Brighton's properties should make blight less likely too.
Any Brghton residents?
Hello
I got blight by the end of august (28th was the first real deaths)
Im in Moneyreagh in Northern Ireland (About 8 miles from the east coast )It affected my pink fir apples and my tamina outdoor tomatoes. Thankfully it was late enough for the pfas to have made good tubers already but all tomatoes but my sungold which are in a separate mini greenhouse were lost.
How many years are we going to keep saying well ill put some in becuae maybe it will be a dry summer.
Not hopeful , maybe we should start growing rice !
x sunloving :-*
hi Sunloving if i did have a lottie i might of seriously lined a raised bed with pond liner, fill it with some really great growing medium and had a go a growing a bed of rice, just for the hell of it, but then after all the prep the summer would probably turn out to be one of the hottest :-\, wouldn't it? ;)
I got it on my potatoes on Northampton allotment and on my tomatoes growing outside at home.
The neighbouring allotment to me had most of their (outside) tomatoes ravaged by blight.
I am thinking of getting Sarpo Mira potatoes next year. But they are expensive compared to Desiree and others.
Clive
Walton-on-Thames Surrey
Outside Tomatoes hit early August,
Hit the whole Allotment very badly
Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire.
Greenhouse tomatoes all got blight at the end of August. I had two tomato plants which I put in a flower bed in front of the house and they started showing signs of blight a week ago.
I only grew a few potatoes and they were in pots outside. They showed no signs of blight but the foliage died off quickly. When I dug some out yesterday there were a few rotted ones in the compost. This may have been due to being over watered with all the rain that we have had this year.

virginiawater surrey 9th sept potatoes outside
addlestone surrey greenhouse tomatoes today :( :'(
I grew S Mira and S Axonia this year. S Mira leaves died off first. I think I should have dug them up earlier (waiting for a dry day ha ha ) when I did brave the mud and dug them up there was a lot of slug damage and quite a few rotton ones don,t know whether this was blight or because of the slugs but will keep a eye on the good ones if they go rotton it is blight
S Axona,s hualms stayed green a lot longer, didn,t have as much slug damage or rotton ones. will watch how these are storing as well
found I liked the taste of both although found both best steamed or baked in jackets
will grow both again but might spray and dig up earlier and of course this year has been wet and hopfully could be a bit dryer next year
marg
am in burnley lancs no blight as yet on indoor or outdoor toms :)
* Did you get blighted? Yes :(
* Where are you growing? Harrow, Middlesex
* What did it hit, tomatoes &/ potatoes? Tommies - we didn't grow spuds this year, but it looks as though others on our site didn't get blight on the potatoes, just tomatoes
* When did it hit? First signs early August, but all 70 plants were destroyed by end August
* If tomatoes were affected, were they inside or outside? Outside
Looks like some of my outdoor toms have blight as of now - just Roma, Latah seem fine but still green. No time to deal with it today but hopefully I'll get home early enough to deal with it tomorrow. Greenhouse ones are OK so far.
Latah seemed fairly resistant for me as well.
I'm in Woking, Surrey and my main crop spuds got hit at the allotment in Mid August, thankfully the spuds themselves have been fine.
Outdoor tomato's were hit about 2 weeks ago.
Maidstone: I have blight in my tomatoes now.
Hi, just back from hls so didn' read yr post til then. I'm in Cornwall where it's been raining forever. Potatoes (plot and pfa) all blighted in July. Tomatoes, grown in pots at home all blighted early September.
(Beans, very very poor crop. Pumpkins, both sets planted eaten by the hordes of slugs which overtook lottie. Courgettes only just now giving a few weedy specimens.)
Seems to spread from the SW?

the SW does appear to be hit quite badly as does central England with less numbers up north and beyond. coastland don't seem to be hit to badly either maybe the high winds keeps it moving ???.
