Thanks, but nothing to do with the photographer, all down to patient models!  It's on the lid of a plastic tool chest and I think they must like the heat in the plastic.  I was snapping away a few inches away from them and they weren't batting an eyelid.

Lucky you ceres, not seen one dragonfly this year,  Perhaps I have too much growth in my pond.  Think I'll give it a clearout. When are they mostly about ?
Wish me luck next year

Depends on the species. On my site it's mainly late summer.

 :) lovely photo, it's a common darter,

not many here in Lincoln this year, I'm usually stalking dragonflies most of August/Sept, insects have had a terrible time again this year weatherwise/ shades x

Thanks for the ID shades.  It's been great watching them this summer.  I've twice had one settle on my knee while I've been sitting having a cuppa.  I also came across a bright red one on the ground but only got a distant pic before it moved off.  Am still seeing an odd one or two buzzing around now but they don't seem to be staying put any more.

Amazing pic!  When they landed on my knee, the camera was elsewhere, of course.  Do you know if they're attracted to a heat source then, like a warm body?

they love soaking up the rays ceres, metal as shown here on my greenhouse or paving slabs, bricks , the path along my local riverside walk, anything that conducts heat they will pose on ;D

I apologise for highjacking your thread with my photos :)/ shades x

Wow!  What a fantastic pic!  Don't apologise, it's great to see brilliant images and get more info.  The more you get to know, the more you appreciate what you see on the plot.

All beautiful shots!  This time of year we don't see them. I wonder where they go.

The adults die. The larvae spend two or three years in ponds, canals and rivers, growing slowly, until they turn into adults.
