Well done, Emma Jane!!  I've tried nicking mine but the juice still seems clear so I haven't "harvested" yet, hope I'm as lucky as you.

As with Asparagus remember that, after all that trouble, only the best butter will do!. Anything else is an insult. = Tim

Many congrats EJ - I remember you saying you hadn't been successful with corn before so you must be really pleased - it looks wonderful.

I had no hope for mine as most haven't got beyond 3ft tall!  However, they are definitely growing cobs, even at that height so I may be lucky yet.  Hope they're as nice as EJs!

......and another green face emoticon, mine get eaten by something before being ripe! We thought (hoped) it was birds so we netted them but it's something else. We did eat some of their left over half cobs, half ripe and could imagine how good they would be ripe!

Your corn must have been soooooo tasty EJ and also brace yourself for a wonderful tomato and melon glut. I can't wait for our second ripe melon, it won't be long now.

Your sweetcorn look very tasty, if you like corn so much have you tried growing them as baby corn.  We live in the Perth area and have just started harvesting the baby corn.  It's our first year on this allotment and next year I will be doubling the amount of corn grown, as it seems to have been a success.
By the way any spare cobs, send them our way ............please

Well done again EJ.  :P
You're must worked hard on your allotment. All your vegs & fruits are going very well. I'm so jealous what the techniques please tell me. I'm still waiting for mine. When can you tell they are ready? I like to try some babycorn next year because I cannot get any seeds this year!

Anyone wishing to grow true baby corn may want to try to find seeds for this variety:

Nice one EJ. I had my first one yesterday. What a difference from the supermarket ones, eh?
Someone asks, 'How do you know they're ready'.
The tassles on the top of the cob turn brown. Open up the top of the cob and press your thumb nail into one of the seeds. If a milky liquid shoots out, it's ready. Support the stem of the plant, grasp the cob and push downwards. It will break off cleanly. If you have more than one cob on the plant, take the bottom one first. Run for home!

Took the plunge today and picked five!  Boiled 3 in unsalted water but the other 2 I 'covered' in butter sprinkled on black pepper wrapped in foil and cooked in pressure cooker - ate them first and they were absolutely delicious. Mr W who doesn't eat tinned sweetcorn and very reluctant about shop bought was raving about them so reward enough for all my worry.

Anyway they were all delicious - now I know what you have all been goping on about - there simply is no comparison.

by the way Ken your step by step instruction on picking came in handy!

Tassles turned brown but cobs not full to the top so asked another plotter and she said they should be more yellow?
I have been going for the advise on this site about pointed or blunt to tell cos don`t like to open and test too much cos the bugs get in. picked 21 last week and sneakily ate one while Becky was out!!! nice! more ready soon. definately on next years list... :D

Picked another 20 today.  Wow they are gorgeous.  Number one son ate one as though it was to be his last meal.  Wish number one daughter would eat them!  Bumper harvest of corns for us, planted out 40 plants, each one has at least 2 cobs on, and so far I have only picked 22 cobs!

Pixie, at the risk of sounding un-American, I don't like corn very much so, no, I haven't tried this variety. I have bought numerous seeds from this company (when I was last in the U.K. I did see some of their pasta sauce on sale, so you may  be familiar with their products) and have a lot of confidence in their offerings (their Peacevine tomato is unsurpassed for flavour, including Green Grape, in my opinion).

Step daughter came to the allotment today, she didn't know where corn came from, so I showed her.  It became a competition who could point me in the direction of the biggest cobs!  Picked just 6, enough for supper and I cannot begin to tell you how sweet and creamy and delicious they are when they are so fresh!  I don't think I will ever be able to buy supermarket corn again!

Hi Emma,
Did you ate all your corn right away or do you freeze any of them? How's the best way to freeze them?Because we(chinese) never freeze vegetables! It was  strange to us to freeze veggies.
Title: Re:Sweetest corn of all!
Post by: Andy H on August 22, 2004, 22:48:25
I think that when they are ready you freeze them or they waste! We did 51 so far in freezer, only ate 6 so far.

What do the chinese do then? if they don`t freeze veggies?

Yup, stripped them, blanched them, into ice water, dried, bagged and frozen.  All within an hour of picking!  No idea what they will be like, but number one son loves them so much, it is great to see him eating something I have grown, and something that is good for him, so it is worth me preserving some for the forthcoming months.

Ours never make it to the freezer, we gorge ourselves on them! (though this year I have grown double the amount, so if I can find any space in my minute freezer, may give it a go!) Had our first last night, smothered in butter (V. Naughty!)And they were superb! I was like an excited child when I went to pick, youngest hubby and I then unwrapped the parcels to see what we had, great fun! I think of all the veg I grow, sweetcorn has to be my favorite!

Yuet - small, mediumm or large cobs - "blanch 4,6 or 8 mins". I never give them more than 6. Cool well for as long.
Make sure you have a 4* freezer if you want to keep them for any time.

Emma -  they'll be great. = Tim

I cant believe how sweet they are - you could almost drizzle them with syrup!

Does anyone have any tips for knowing when baby corn is ready?

Picked our first yesterday, 'Kelvedon Glory' -which went in late. It lived up to its name, the cobs were so good my wife had hers without butter -unheard of ;D

You're supposed to be able to save the seed -anyone tried it.

i returned today to find three ear's of corn had been eaten, stripped completly, by i suspect mice! :(
There are still a few left but not ready for harvesting yet but if i leave them will they be there later? not betting on it.

worth spending a tenna on ten traps and putting round base of corn with something nicer than corn! I like little mice but they have to die when they go for my produce! Good luck.

Kelvedon Glory is a F1 hybrid, if you save the seeds they may not come true.
