Title: FLOSSY.. chatty post as I promised..please join in.
Post by: Jeannine on August 31, 2008, 12:44:14
Hi FLOSSY.. I was sad to read among another post   that you had joined recently and didn't get much response to a question you asked somewhere else, also you had not had much conversation.. so here you go.

Welcome to A4A, we are a daft bunch of folks, more or less, we look after each other very well, if you have a question post it, someone will answer if they know.  Sometimes it pays to check the search button to see if the problem had come up before.

Perhaps you can tell us about yourself, where you are, what you like to grow etc, you will soon get to know us.

I live in Hull, we have 2 lotties, I'm lived in North America for a long time and came back here 7 years ago. Married my childhood sweetheart in the late fifties, have three Pekingese dogs and 4 cats and i work in a school

I grow veggies..not flowers , they die when I approach.

I have a huge collection of  squash,so if you have any questions about that I can certainly help you, I also have a very big collection of tomato seeds and also beans. My last love is my sweetcorn but I don't collect the seeds as they don't keep.

Often we have was are called pass the parcel swaps so keep you eyes open for that, also check on the swap page often folks are looking for or have to spare some interesting seeds.

If you want a personal chat with anyone there is a way to do that by sending them a personal message.

There are some real experts here on many topics so you should find all the help you need.

So there you go FLOSSY, now come on, we would like to meet you and I am sure others would too.

XX Jeannine

Hey Flossie, sorry you felt you were being ignored,I am sure no one has done that intentionally.I must admit I have limited experience with veggies so tend to leave answers to more experienced posters, but nothing personal :)

Sometimes it does make you cross if you feel you are passed over,I posted a picture of a rose once and no one commented so I complained and sure enough some kind soul admired it for me. ;D

Have fun and enjoy

I remember that rose, Betula. I was slow to respond to it due to my being struck rigid with it's beauty and obvious professional growing care.
[A bit like my cracking pic of a dragon-fly last year....the whole of A4A are obviously still struck with rigidity even after all this time.]  :D :D

Hi jeannine,

How lovely to get your post and thank you for making time for me, gosh you must be busy with two
lotties an'all !  Thank you as well for all the helpful directions to the site, would you mind if I printed it
[ new, - pressy from my son ] to have at my elbow ?

I have had my lottie for 14 mths now - do love it and do much more than sulk down there ! though does get the digging done !     Lost the plot the first year [ not literaly ] after growing and planting - we moved house and it was down hill for a bit, we are now in recovery after starting again with plenty of winter digging and composting and a rewarding harvest so far.
I say we, but my hubby found it too much after recovering from surgery and helpfully takes care of our
garden at home.    I'm past retiring age so find the excercise good for me, tho  " and rest " comes round
quite often!  We have been together for 26yrs and have 5 children and 7 grandchildren between us , sadly no pets now - but you never know !

Originaly from North London, but have moved around the south for many years to return to S East so as to be near our grandchildren and family, so enriching our lives even more !

First time allotment for me, though can remember helping my Dad with his when quite young - I wanted a ' little house ' like the plot next to his --  now I have one !! Think I am regressing as I have a terrible urge to paint it  in all colours and hang a pink glitter bead curtain at the door with a wind sock on the roof!!    I must get out more !!

Have always gardened but not for vegetables, except the odd row of something ,so the big ' plan ' of it all was a bit overwhelming at first. Must say the last winter months have gone by so quickly with all the sewing and transplanting , but each week  had some meaning to it as you worked towards Spring and the big plant!!   I did sew some squash jeanine, a bit too early in pots - grew well but   they were well fed up by the time they got to the plot  --   they are now trying to make for the main gate as they reach for freedom !   Thought I would just let them meander - only have two butter nuts that I can see but didn'texpect much as they were seeds from a squash that we bought.
I'm sure I will be looking to you for advice squash wise and many other wise too !

Thank you again jeanine, I have so enjoyed our chat and hope will do again,

Hi Flossy, if I don't get an answer I just reply to my own post so as to "bump it up" again!

As you can see I'm in Tadcaster, near York. Don't really have enough time for my allotment, but feeling quite positive about it at the moment as I've had quite a lot of free time recently so managed to get on top of some bits of it at least- and it's always better at harvest time!Staring a new job on Tuesday and I'llbe working Tues-Thurs so hope to make the most of my long weekends!

Hello betula,

So pleased to hear from you, thank you !

I shall really be pleased to talk flowers with you, but - sorry I dont know the latin names so hope you will be gentle with me !   ::)

Please, please show me your rose, I'm sure it was beautiful.    I am removing old shrubs [ 20yrs some of them] that are huge and out of control at the moment,  but only those that I can replace this Autumn.

Have a Newzealand Tea tree at the ready [ shrub], though these can get large too - a Ceanothas, cant
remember at the moment the type it is but has a dark blue flower, oh and a 50p last legs Chinese
Lantern bush that produced 8 lovely orange lanterns this summer --  summer !, what does she mean ?

Do you know of any shrubs that are colourful and dont need too much care regards pruning please, oh also have herbs and a few flowers on the plot.

To my shame' I have an Albertine climbing rose[ not sure if spelt that right ] sprawling around the back
of my garden waiting for the hedging to be cut - then it has somwhere to go. :-[

 Hi there caroline 7758,

Thanks for posting to me, so glad to say hello .

Afraid I dont know a lot about the area where you live, but have heard it is very beautiful around there.

Have always wanted to visit York and I will !!  eventualy !  I nearly did many years ago when as a Lab
Tech. I was asked to accompany some pupils on an outing to York  --  was really looking forward to it,
than they diverted me to The Ideal Home Exhibition !  Was not so bad as we all got food freebies which
kept the kids happy !

Will say, the best part of this year has been on the plot picking all the goodies,  and best of all - digging
up the potatoes.  Just loved it, had the grandchildren helping and the squeals when they spotted them in the soil was ear piercing !

Wishing you all the very best for Tues,  ' go get'm girl ' as they say.

Hi Flossy
My allotment is also in Enfield, north London. I have had it since I retired at 60.  I think it was the best thing I ever did as I love it, the people and the fresh air.  I am also doing a lot more cooking as cannot waste anything one grows.  Even had a chest freezer for a Christmas present and freeze surplus beans etc.  I think this site is very good and gives a lot of useful information and recipes.  Please Betula can we see your rose.  You must be clever cause I don't know how to post photographs, read the instructions and gave up half way through.  It doesn't help that I haven't a digital camera yet, may buy one before I go to Italy in September.

Hi Flossy,
I don't really belong on this site (wrong country, wrong climate and no allotment) but stumbled on it and stayed because of the friendly gardening advice. The down side is they'll soon have you planting unheard of things!

 Hi Manicscousers,

It's wonderful !   :) I have woken up to find many new friends this morning --     :o [ did I say that right ?!?]

Thanks so much for saying hello, Hope you've been somewhere warm and sunny.

Will have to look you up on the map -- only   know where Liverpool is, is that ignorant or what !!

Would be interested to compare our plots as they are far apart  climate wise,I suppose planting times will vary a lot  - but expect we both enjoy the same problems with extreme weather !!
Have wanted to create an eco system [ dont really know in depth what that means ] but would like to create some shelter, shade and complimenary planting.   When the packet says ' plant in full sun' -
I dont think they means ' shrivel to a crisp ' ,  as the sun is so 'strong' now.

Better go -- i'm ' rabbiting '

 Morning cornykev,

It's great to hear from you, thanks for posting   :D

I'll try to be sensible too  --  afraid it wont work tho !!

Enfield eh,  whoa -  I was born and reared in Wood Green, between Bounds Green and Muswell Hill --  In the shade of the Ally Pally, spent my summers [ yes we had them then ] dawn till dusk in the Durnsford road openair Swimming Pool - 10/- [ 50p] season ticket which we used to pass through the back gate for our friends to get in- ummm, enough of my misspent youth.   :-X

I have heard tell that you are a Spurs fan .... well,  I support a dedicated, fanatical, ardent, obsessed Spurs
fan who is my son,  we cheer and groan with him and he has taken me to some great matches !
OH is a committed Birmingham City fan, so have to divide myself between  ' Oh well, next time ' and ' nice one'.
Wish Spurs all the best, ' nice one'.   ;D

Look forward to more chats,

 Hello Borlotti,

It's great to hear from you, thanks a lot for posting,   :D

Like you Borlotti, I would be sad without my lottie now,  the chats , plant swapping and being missed if you go awol for a while, apart from the really good bit of growing and eating your homegrown food.
Dont mind the weather either - to a degree ! and have often soldiered away in the drizzle without
realising I am getting seriously wet - mad lady !!
My  son gave me his chest freezer a couple of years ago and I dont know what I would do without it
now. Did feeze some thickly sliced, seasond and roasted courgettes yesterday -  a  first, so shall defrost some later to see if they surved ok.  Hope you enjoy using yours to the,  all those goodies to enjoy
later.

I agree and I shall never, ever leave this site - unless I'm ' buttoned ' off !!.  just to mention, I've lost mine !  has anyone seen it ?

Hope you have a lovely trip to Italy in Sept,  are you going anywhere near Perugia ? My daughter has
lived there for 25yrs now, and my little Italian grandson is a darling [ 5yrs], will see him soon.

Lovely to chat with you,

Floss  xxx

I also spent loads of time at Durnsford Road swimming pool, sunbathing and chatting up the boys.  It is now a garden centre and has been for some time.  We have an indoor pool at Southbury Road, that once was outdoor.  Also spent all the school holidays at Barrowell Green open air pool with my children, next to the rubbish dump in Winchmore Hill.  It was cheap to get in as I took them every day. Took my daughter, granddaughter and myself swimming recently and it cost nearly £10, couldn't do that everyday.  Well must do some housework and then go for a walk, guess where I am going (allotment). I am going to the Italian lakes with the Ramblers, walking holiday, in September.

 Hi emagggie,

Thanks for saying hello,   ;D

So good to know that you're not far away, we can compare thunder storms and such like !

Better day today though and aim to go down the lottie to see if I have any decent sweetcorn left,
had two really  good cobs, gave a couple to the grandchildren - had no responce as yet ?
Then discovered some of them didn't mature properly !   Dont think they got watered enough ?
or was that elusive sun !

Looking forward to picking everyones brains,

Another reason for new posts being overlooked: this site has so many forums that tempt one to add one's two cents to, that it becomes impossible to keep up with them so sometimes it means skimming over, reading but not posting.

I have to restrain myself posting or the garden will never get weeded and I'll only become a cyber-gardener.

That said, it is disappointing to post, especially a picture, and get no response, but it is a rarity I assure you for these A4A folk to be silent (on any topic) and some of the funniest posts are when they veer off-topic. Better than late night comedians. Just luv it ;D

 Pleased to meet you GrannieAnnie,

Sorry I,ve been so long in saying hello !   :-[

Had to shoot down to the lottie and dig !  We have a new lottie man from the Council, and he was
due to make a visit soon.  As I've had 1/3 of my plot covered from beginning of winter thought he might dissaprove !  Did an 8x6 patch so it's looking better.

I know you do belong, cos I've been reading your posts for some while,   ;D

Oh thanks, you've posted me again x

I shall be really grown up next time if I dont always get a reply,  I think I must miss a lot too as I generally come into A4A in the mornings and again about 4pm, but not during the evening tho, tend
to be idle and watch the tele.

Thanks for saying hello,

Hi Flossy I also lived in Wood green, moved here about 1970/71, I'll have to ask my Mum that one, I also used to go to the southbury road lido many moons ago, things have certainly changed in Enfield over the last 10/15 years. SPURS fan yes, still go when I can but with most of our games live these days me and my mates watch most of them in the pub, certainly cheaper and smoke free  ;D. Yes Rosebud they did do well and maybe Sam will treat us to a match ticket one day.  ;D ;D ;D

Hello Flossy

I've been away too - and am just catching up, so welcome!    Have just spent two weeks back in England - my old home of sunny Cambridge and Norfolk! - and had a great time. Have to admit as we walked around I wondered how close I was to some of the people who post on here!  :)

I'm not so much of a chatterer as the others  :P  and as I'm still learning loads from this site I tend to ask more questions than offer advice!  I don't live in the "right country" either, or have an allotment (I do have part of the garden turned over to veggies though!) - but that doesn't stop people being helpful and friendly!
