Title: Hawthorn berries
Post by: newbieveggie on August 30, 2008, 17:41:19
Hi there
I have LOADS of hawthorn berries in my garden and I wondered if any of you had any good recipes for them. I would love a recipe for hawthorn jelly and also hawthorn vodka, but anything would be good to try.
Also has it been a bad year for elderberries as I dont seem to have many this year ?

Many thanks

:)

My Wife makes what she calls Hedge Row Jelly, its got sloes,b. berries elderberries, crab apples, anything we can get from the moors and she always puts in hawthorn berries as she thinks it helps with the taste. Even the adult G/children like it.

Hi there
Many thanks for your reply. I have just bought a book called 'Fruits of the Hedgerow and Unusual Garden Fruits'. Its a fantastic book with loads of recipe ideas including the one that sounds like your wifes.
Spent yesterday afternoon foraging our hedgerow, great fun, now for the jam making!
;D

There's no need for that!!! I'm sure if you pick them and use them correctly, they're perfectly pleasant!!!  :P
