Title: Dealing with a Troll..
Post by: Hyacinth on August 29, 2008, 17:52:25
...advice from the webmaster of another forum I visit, who says that a Troll needs the oxygen of replies to survive...

Starve the Troll of oxygen and it dies..

Pity it's not a gardening forum & can sort out my tomato blight/bolting fennel/sulky courgettes, etc. etc. problems,  as simply ;D

The trouble here is that the troll in question is clearly a knowledgeable gardener, with much to add and at least something to learn. Every gardener learns about disappointment, perseverance, acceptance and patience. We're forced to question our preconceptions and stubbornness, and continuously learn from our mistakes.

I actually think that this troll could easily stop being one, and none of us would bat an eyelid or give it a second thought. We would, I think, welcome him with open arms. It really doesn't have to be this way. But a without a modicum of mutual respect this will be impossible.

So stop being the victim, join in and have some fun! I'm at the front of the queue waiting to shake your hand.

Yep, pretty much what Rosebud said in one of the 'offending' threads in the gallery.

Agree with Ollie, when s/he stops trolling & makes the effort, I'm sure things could be very nice once again :)

I think the best way to treat this is to carry on being helpful/informative to posters.

When you get some wind up merchant doing their best to upset the applecart, leave them alone.

We are usually a happy bunch, so why let one person spoil it. ;D

I wonder if this troll is the same one as has been bothering the Beeb Gardening board for a while now. Name sound similar to his many aliases.

I thought  Ollie's  original answer was very good. I was going to post similar, but was beaten to it.

Ignore them and they will eventually go away.

Methinks one and the same Palustris - reason I moved here!

Made a BIG mistake answering a mathematical question about grid gardening and how much he could expect to crop (son was at Loughborough on a maths degree so enlisted his help). We knew the answer was right but he said it wasn't enough for his needs!

I'm a pretty placid person but that got my back up.

So unless a person is willing to play nicely with us nice folk - don't add to his manure heap.  ;)

I dont actually think there are many troll's on here. Just a few peeps that seem to have bad social skills or just type the wrong thing (if you know what i mean), not knowing there winding others up with what they write, i expect there just the same when talking face to face. Being really rude back to them, ganging up on them, is pointless - and may actually really offend them.

In my view a troll is someone who specifically comes on a forum just to wind people up and start an arguement.

Yes, I think I know what Keef's getting at.  Don't know if he had anyone specific in mind when he wrote the above, but we both know someone like this.

This chap would never be found on a forum (he wouldn't know where to start with a PC), but in person, he's somewhat eccentric and can be very rude in his idea of joking.   At the same time he's knowledgeable in certain areas, can be very helpful (often in an interfering sort of way!) and at bottom has a heart of gold.  Everyone who knows him just accepts him for the way he is.

I'm sure Keef will recognise who I'm talking about  ;).  Lord knows what havoc he'd wreak if he ever did discover the internet and join a forum ...  ;D

I'd like to consider this thread closed, please, as J. has also started a post about dealing with Forum bullies and I don't want to appear to be creating a 'contentious' thread and then abandoning it without further input.

Want to say, tho, that in the 8+ years of membership of various Forums, I can't ever remember being so concerned about the unpleasantness I've been reading here which prompted this thread.

I respect Palustris and have known him for ages and ages;Ninnyscrops I don't 'know' but their joint contribution here have been confirmation for me that something's wrong...

Cheers all, Lishka
