Title: Aquilegia (Columbine): When do you seed them, Fall or Spring?
Post by: GrannieAnnie on August 22, 2008, 23:27:50
We had some pretty blue ones that have gone to seed. I'd like to plant some to give to our son-in-law who is color blind (can only see blue, everything else looks brown- isn't that sad?) But he tries gardening just the same.
The saying "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" struck me today when I watched him looking at our garden which is mostly flowers in pink, red and purple, all of which looked brown to him, even green looks brown, so I doubt it looked very beautiful to him! :'( :'(

Anyway, he would be able to see the blue aquilegia if I could plant some.

GA, I am no expert but I have always just shaken the seed heads around on the soil when I have cut them and they just grew.  My garden is full of aquilegias of all colours.  Not much help really!  I love them and it would be lovely for your son-in-law to have something he can see. :)

It is my bedtime now and I shall drift off to sleep planning a blue border for him. :)

Thank you!  Would you weed it, too please?

Hahaha.......hey Tulipa a free holiday stay in the States!! ;D ;D ;D

I agree with shaking the seeds out, that is what they do naturally when ripe. Scatter them all over the place and hope for some blue ones GA ;)

I collect mine and either give them away or take them to the local woods and spread them liberally - a bit like Mrs Wilmots ghost.

I'd sow them now, but only because there's too many other things to do in the spring.
Either scatter on the ground, or put a pinch into a 1 litre pot and leave out in the garden somewhere.

Like forget-me-nots these things self-seed everywhere with no help at all.

I find that they change though, the shape of the flower or the colour.

However, if you are passing on the seed heads for growing elsewhere then Spring, I find is the ideal time to sow them.

Will they flower the same year when you sow them in the Spring?

Only if you sow them early Jan. inside in pots & pamper them, etc, then you might, just might, get them to flower in the first year, some time around late July.

Some of mine do, bit its a bit hit and miss and also depends on the weather, you need a good warm sunny spring, with moderate rainfall.

VANDAL!

If they were meant to be there they would be growing there naturally

Just googled an image- one picture it looked light purple and another site it looked a beautiful delft blue with white bands!  The latter would be a beauty and deer resistant!  Thank you, Betula.
