Hi everyone,
hope you're all well. I was wondering .. what veggies can I sow late? I have just harvest some potatoes which I put in 2 months late (against the advice of others ) and they where fantastic ( 7 lbs of new potatoes from just plants)!!
I am not new to growing veg but I am new to growing veg on an allotment, it just seems such a waste of space..... I have the seeds and I have the soil, so why not give it go!
I know the seed packets say Sow by June but when were these instruction written and for what area in the UK?? now that our winters are getting milder could we extend our June to say August? Has any one tried? I would appreciate any feed back from trials and any advice on the matter....but please hurry as I am harvesting the rest of my potatoes tomo andplan to use the space for this experiment.

hi thanks for the speedy resonse ;D
It didn't mention Carrots..any one tried carrots late ???
I was sowing Autumn King carrots all week, and some direct coriander.. and loads of winter stuff... ;D
The plan is to be able to go up to lottie over winter and still pick... so I would be ken to hear what you've planted saddad x
In the last week I've done a late sowing of carrots, peas and dwarf french beans which all said sow by July, but I'm in London so try to stretch it a bit.
I also sowed more spring onions, lettuce, mixed salad leaves, radish, parsley and coriander.
I think you can also still sow things like chard, pak choi, lamb's lettuce etc.
Seed is cheap so it's worth taking a bit of a gamble and hoping for a good late summer.
Later on you can do broad beans and japanese onions for overwintering.
and although the summers have neen a bit of a wash out recently the Autumns have been long and mild... ::)

Well said FG! I've been thinking along pretty much the same lines myself. I'm thinking of using one of my swiftly-emptying potato beds to try out some stuff that should've been in already, according to the seed packets, but that I haven't done yet for one reason or another.
Oh, and you can add carrots to my sowing list on the other thread - in fact there's a thread somewhere about a new carrot on the market - by T&M? - that seems to be winter hardy, so I might be tempted by that one.
Depending on where you are it might be worth trying overwintering 'normal' stuff. I did it with a late sowing of carrots last year - can't remember off the top of my head which they were but I only grew Nantes, Flyaway and Kingston last year so it was one of them. They sailed right through the winter - they weren't huge when I pulled them but the taste and texture were good. The tops stayed green all through.
I also left a late sowing of White Lisbon spring onions in and they overwintered perfectly too.
Hi all, I have put in a load of onions in my greenhouse, and just put some more carrots in and thinking of putting some more in now they seem to be doing fine,
and I think I will try other things too, just to see what happens.
I think given the weather, I'm just going to plant everything and see what works - nothing to lose and everything to gain if you ask me. Let's face it we're confused with weather, so hopefully so will the seeds!! lol ;D
