I grow my brassicas under (enviro mesh), not only does it keep off the nasties, but seems to help mature them earlier.  The mesh I use is not the well known brand but a cheaper insect mesh cover, with a life span of at least 10 years. One of my fellow allotment holders has been using the same mesh for  12 years.

Caveat - the makers do say that mesh should not stay on for the whole life of the plants. Can cause mould.

the mesh is good, it really does protect them from the dreaded cabbage white - and from some of the more extreme weather conditions too, I think. :) :) :)
