Title: Fine Beans
Post by: Dibsy on August 14, 2008, 17:11:10
Hello

Just a quick question.  Are the "fine beans" that you buy in supermarkets just small French beans or something else?

Thanks

The adjective "fine" is there to make you think you're buying a superior product.

Or even because they are delicate - as in fines herbes?

there are 'fine', 'extra fine' and 'bobby' - I think this is the description of when the bean gets older the name description changes, which makes sense although it would be obvious just looking at them  ;D

Do you mean the very thin ones..filet beans from Kenya, they never get as thick as the regualar French beans if you do they do cost more than the others. I  grow Safari Kenyan beans along with my assorted Frenchies, very slender at maturity.

Thanks for all your replies.  I will look out for Sarfari Kenyan for next year and pick this years nice and small as I prefer the 'fine' beans to normal French beans.

Is there a climber that produces the filet type beans or is only dwarfs like Safari and Nomad?

Thanks Jeannine - I find climbers easier to manage than dwarfs although the dwarfs are quicker to crop.
