Post by: scarecrow941 on August 12, 2008, 17:09:22
any one tried  the fibre 6 pack  for starting lettuce swedes etc off in and planting straight in ground, would the box rot quick enough not to stop the roots

They would probably work but you would have to cut the bottoms off for the roots to grow.

I save them for chitting potatoes in & transportig them to the plot for planting.

Hello Scarecrow941

You could try using the insides of toilet rolls (maybe cut in half) to start lettuce etc.  I use them in the spring  to start Sweet Peas and runner beans - stand them on a seed tray, then just plant when they're ready.

Maybe i'm doing something wrong but no cardboard seems to rot quick enough to not inhibit root growth.

the soil must stay moist and the whole tube must be buried under soil level, or else the cardboard doesn't breakdown quickly enough for the roots to grow through and the plant becomes strangled. some people before planting cut one side of the tube to help the roots escape.
