my raspberries are being strangled by the dreaded b************weed im going to move the canes later in the year .what time should i move them?
should i move in late september /november as per planting time...answers on a post card
I'm not an expert, but I would have thought it would be when they are dormant for the winter.
I wouldn't move them for Bindweed. Are you organic? If not, then you can carefully paint roundup onto the easy to reach leaves of the bindweed. Alternatively, it's really not that much of a chore to snap off the bindweed at the bottom, and just keep doing this. In my opinion, bindweed is one of the best weeds - although it's quick & deadly if left, it's easy to see & to keep under control.
Or use Tumbleweed gel.
Either way, having painted the leaves at the end of the vine, cover them with a sandwich bag and tie off - those metal strip closers are the easiest.
This will stop the weedkiller washing off and also prevent the wind from blowing the coated bindweed into your raspberries and weedkilling them as well!
A bit of a bruising of the treated leaves is said to help the effectiveness of the weedkiller.
so will the weedkiller be very effective. i have lots of bindweed encroaching from every boundry on my allotment. i know it is easy to pull back but it then grows twice as much where it is broken off. I hate the stuff. I am going all out to beat it this year!!!! >:(
