Title: Kolkwitzia amabalis: The Beauty Bush?
Post by: Garden Manager on August 11, 2008, 12:15:03
Does anyone out there know of this plant?

I have been asked by a client to prune amoungst other shrubs a shrub they called the 'Beauty Bush'. The only plant i can find with this common name is Kolkwitzia amabalis. I dont know of any others with this common name. Any ideas please.

If there is only one 'Beauty Bush' then, does anyone know how to prune it? The property it is in is about to be let out and the owner wants the garden tidied up first. So it is not a case of 'wait until such and such time', it has to be done (in some form or another) now. Ideally without compromising either the plant or its flowering.

Can anyone help please?

It is the only plant I know of this name. Pruning is not normally necessary, but if needed is done after flowering has finished. So, you probably could do it now without doing to much damage, Usual advice, cut out the oldest wood first.

I think at worst it might not flower next summer if pruned now.

It flowers on new growth so I would not worry too much. Trim back to produce a neat appearance then bank the money.
