Title: huckleberries
Post by: adrianhumph on August 11, 2004, 11:01:20
Hi all :D,
Has any one else tried huckleberries ???, I brought a cheapo packet of seeds just for a laugh, sowed  half of them in a seed tray, pricked out into small pots then when about 8inches tall planted them down the lottie. I now have 13 plants, they have grown about 2 foot tall & wide and are covered in masses of small green berries. Apparently you don`t pick them until October, preferably after a touch of frost. They are dead easy to grow, have not suffered from any pests or diseases, and i am looking forward to loads of pies & some wine, try them next year (seeds available from Unwins)   8)  8)

Hi Adrian...the plant looks a bit like deadly nightshade, in fact I once stopped a kiddy eating them , until his Dad explained. More like a blackcurrant or elderberry.
