Question 1.
why has my espallier fig tree only got leaves at the top of the shoot?
hiya, grimfingers, nice to meet you ;D
are your fingers grim, I know mine are ;D
I've been nipping the tops off my fig tree branches , mind you, it's not an espalier :)

You will enjoy yourself here I'm certain. ;D
Wotcha! welcome to the madhouse! ;)
Welcome from me tooXX Jeannine
Figs do tend to have their leaves at the top of new shoots.
Would make the comment here that because figs tend to fruit on stems that have grown the previous year, I can't envisage an espalier form giving you much fruit? have never seen this done so would be interested.
Welcome - great name!
Some advice from RHS.

I would just add that some of our figs come from the current year's buds - perhaps because it's on a south facing wall in London - and we ate the first ones last week.
