Post by: Jeannine on August 09, 2008, 10:41:29
Is anyone into this.. it has caught my eye and I am busy collecting stuff to start, but so much choice I feel totally overwhelmed.

I have tons of questions and no one to ask.

Hi Jeannine, I have been card making for a while now. Have to say I did a lot more before I got my allotment! You're right, there is so much stuff available it's difficult knowing where to start. I tried all sorts of techniques when I started but then found a couple that I really enjoyed doing so a lot of the stuff I bought at first is at the back of the cupboard or has been passed on to my sister. My main piece of advice would be not to spend too much on anything until you have tried it and know you enjoy doing it.

Hi Jeannine,

I am not at my PC at the moment so can't find the exact website but 'The Potting Shed' has a section for card making and on there links to other card making websites/blogs in people's signatures which might have some help.  Leonnie had a link to it on here at one time.

Sorry this is not more helpful.  My daughter loves card making and I have done a few, I think it is a very enjoyable and relaxing thing to do.

There are also some lovely monthly magazines with lots of ideas, tips, stockists etc.  WH Smith/Asda/Tesco etc stock them.  The mags are a good place to start - lots of inspiration.

I love card making but mainly to keep me occupied in winter, make my own for Christmas, family and friends, birthday cards, I try to get them done in advance as, once sowing season is here, it goes out of the window..I also sell mine in the local post office, it pays for the materials and my hospice lottery  ;D
keep all your bits and peces, ribbon from bouquets, dried flowers, anything you might feel is useful..I really like stamping and either chalks or glossy gel pens to fill in, I've even made wedding cards and baby ones are a must  ;D
whatever you do, enjoy it, if you need anything, just shout
oh, by the way, stick ons are brilliant, try e bay, it'll blow your mind, just put in card making  ;D

Thank you all. I have bought quite a lot of stuff, so have loads of card, vellum, parchment and backing its and bits and  bobs ,lots of  fancy papers and some handmades,  plus tons of stickers  mostly outlines.

John bought me a Big Shot thing for my birthday with some dies.

I got a job lot, well a couple actually, of wood stamps, stamp pads  and punches on E bay and I have collected several books from Amazon.

I had some stuff already that I used for other things eg a dryer for embossing paints, and I have dug out all my craft paints and silk ones.

I need to buy some watercolours though.

I think I am ready to start but I am still not sure what to start with, there are so many choices.

I might have a few questions for you if you don't mind.

It is a bit mind boggling!!

Thank you

The Docrafts Magazine comes out4 times a year and they have some good ideas.  Plus there's a draw for £1,000 of craft products every month if you sign up to the the docrafts website www.docrafts.co.uk which is where I get my ideas from when i'm a bit stuck!

I make cards, but only for our own use rather than for sale. I make about 30 party invitations for our summer bbq. I also make a set for xmas and then others for birthdays etc. My mum is really into this. She sells them via her church and at fundraising events. Hers are truely brilliant. She has a great gadget which is an electronic cutter. You buy cartridges with different themes and it cuts letters, shapes, animals and hundreds of things. This was expensive though. Probably int he region of a couple of hundred pounds. She makes quite a few cards with a technique where you sew a pattern directly onto the card. It has a specific name and it looks brilliant. Time consuming though. I will ask her what it is called. I also have made cards from those paper cut outs which stick together to make a 3D picture. If you fancy trying those Jeannine give me a shout. I have loads as Ant's dad bought me about 100 back from holland where they have huge markets for this sort of thing. I would be happy to post a couple to you so you can try it.

Thank you Sparkly, I did get some 3d thingies in a job lot I had bought from e bay. I would like to know of anyone is doing any Lace ones, using the green templates for folding the paper and can anyone clue me in about parchment craft,is is Pergamo!!

I have made a few today  some watercolored painted ones and one with a silk background but I am just playing.

I haven't found out what the Big Shot machine can do yet, it had dies.

I have been sorting out all my other craft stuff which could be used I guess, silk paint and dies, lots of handmade paper and mulberry and a big box of rubbet stamps.

Really interesting so far.

Is anyone into embossing?

Hi Jeannie

I used to be really into card making, I don't have the time now, but it's great fun.

My best tip would be to get your things from ebay, but always check the retail price first so you know you are getting a good deal.

If you have Sky or cable, QVC and Ideal world are brilliant. Just hide your credit card first though  ;) They are always demonstrating craft products, you can get lots of ideas. I had to tape about 6 shows for my mum yesterday, all about the Big Shot. She got one recently too and  they were showing you all the different ways it can be used. (I need to work out how to get the shows onto dvd for her, so if I do I will pm you and send you a copy)

Also you could try looking for a craft group. Our local church has one every Wednesday. They charge everyone £1.50 and this money goes towards stamps and expensive things like the big shot, so everyone can use them at the club. My mum and I have met lots of people there and my mum has a whole gang of friends. They also go on trips to craft show s together, like a jolly girls outing.
