Post by: STEVEB on August 06, 2008, 18:43:27
Cleared an area of potaoes ,im gonna dig over and green manure it.I,ve tried mustard seed before and have just got a packet of mixed from Suttons, containing rye, vetch, italian rye grass and forage peas .
Anyone out there with any experience with this seed mix?
is it any good?
how long from sowing to digging in?
Any favourites?

I have been researching this topic this past week.  You can dig it in from 6 - 12 weeks after sowing, depending upon the variety.  But ensure you dig it in before it starts to flower.  Some varieties also suggest to wait up to 6 weeks after digging in before sowing.

I have not used it myself,  just toying with the idea at the moment.

rye grass can inhibit seed germination when dug in, (for up to 6 weeks), use only on areas which will be used for transplanting.  ;)

I have been growing Field Beans over winter as a green manure digging them in in the early spring for the last couple of years.
I have used Rye Grass too

Phacelia during the growing season for short lapses in crop planting

All have worked well and have significantly improved the ground and future crops grown on it

Phacalia and Vetch are my favourites...  hoping to get them into the over winter onion beds and Potatoes today.... ready for the promised rain to increase germination...  ;D

I sowed agricultural mustard where I'd had weedkiller manure mulched between rasps.  It hasn't got big enough to dig in because the pigeons love it and I really can't be bothered to net green manure!

Phacelia has lovely flowers. I left some of mine in for that reason and I'm thinking of trying to collect the seed to use again- worth a try!
