Title: Stupid question no 2000533 - what bits of veg are poisionous??
Post by: piglit on August 10, 2004, 11:37:27
I have at the back of my mind that there are some veg that are bad for you.  But I have no idea which and when.  Something like tomatoes leaves?? Or Potaotes or beans?? While I am weeding I quite often stuff a little morsel of something in my mouth to keep me going - please can someone tell me what not to snack on?

Thanks,

piglit

I'm allergic to tomato leaves - well at least the yellow pollen stuff that's on it makes my hands and arms itch after I've touched them.

Green spuds can give you an upset tummy.

...and as was mentioned here somewhere before, don't eat the green tomato-type fruit on your potato plants - they're poisonous.

Raw runner beans - very dodgy.  The leaves of the horseradish, spuds, rhubarb and tomatoes, all poisonous.  I am sitting here wracking my brain trying to think of what else, but the kids and they heat have gotten the better of me.  :-\

Seriously... raw runner beans??? I eat them all the time.  I knew there was a good reason to ask.  What will they do to me? What about french beans? Oh no.  What is the point of runner beans if I have to cook them??

Dunno if they are dodgy when small, but when the beans are bigger they are iffy.....I'm sure of it.  Oooer, now someone is going to have to correct me!

Mature bean seeds have cyanide like compounds, EJ. This is why they should be boiled for twenty minutes before eating, as it breaks them down.
Piglit- I've never had a problem eating French beans raw, although I don't eat a lot at once, just in case.

I think technically I should be dead.  I have eaten hundreds of raw runner beans... I am off to look up cyanide poisioning to see if I can work out how close to death I am.

By mature I mean when they are allowed to get quite hard- similar to the seeds that you sowed initially. Picked regularly, to avoid 'stringiness', as they should be, the seeds will not get this mature.
