Title: Support for Melons / How many melons per plant ?
Post by: Barnowl on August 04, 2008, 11:02:53
My paintbrush pollination seems to have done the trick and the Minnesota Midget now has seven mini melons in progress.

My two questions are:-

Do I need to provide additional support for the melons or will the vine be strong enough?

Can the plant produce more than 7 or 8 melons or should I pinch out any further attempts by the plant to keep growing?

hi, barnowl, we use the bags either onions or oranges come in, tie them up to the supports, or some people use old tights cut up..I tend to stop the plants at about 6 melons but that's sweetheart, never grown yours  :)

Thanks Manics - support tights it is. Although they are my first melons, I think I will push my luck a little bit by aiming for about 10, since they are quite small compared to a conventional melon like sweetheart, and will pinch out any new growth thereafter. If it seems to be struggling I can always take a few off early.
