I always try to give them a share out every couple of weeks, for the life of me i don,t know why as every time there is an argument about paying for the veg. I don,t want their money and they insist i have it, but i always win, i put it on the door step, knock on the door and run away. Independent old sods

Manics - you should "recycle" for Lidl's.....you know, without them knowing you are helping them out ;). I try and help our local Co-op out in this way now and again!

We always end up giving quite a bit of veg away - neighbours, work collegues and family. You end up with too much and I am always happy to help others out. I will have to try to knock-a-door run thing with one of our elderly neighbours so she doesn't argue about money!
I have the reverse here! People with loads more money than me ( and a HUGE garden) asking for stuff :o. I gave it last year, but tactfully ignored the request this year. ;D
All I want is a thank you. NOT OH NO NOT MORE COURGETTES. I have had 12 packets of crisps and a bottle of wine, but said if you insist of buying me something I will not give you anymore veg. Best idea is put it on front wall at night with a note 'Help yourself' and by morning it has all gone. Might be the pigeons.

I just have a walk around the back of the shops on bin collection days and get loads.
The oldens are great, down the garden we have two old fellers 76 and 74, Jimmy ( Waffen SS ) Nick and Little ( empty carrier bag ) Percy they do their best and we all help them out they know what they cant grow we will give them.
I think with a lot of pensioners where i live ( old pit village ) they like to be independent, i must of argued with one this morning for 10 minutes over not wanting anything for a bag of tomatoes she was so insistant so i took the 50p and when i put the tomatoes in her bag i dropped the money in as well, now i will have to avoid her for a few days so i don,t get a clip round the ear.
I suppose we could put a tin out and say give a donation to charity as some people are embarrassed to take for nothing. Other people, usually the rich ones take everything for nothing (probably why they are rich). Your pensioners sound really lovely people.

We usually give some produce to the new plotholders who are facing a lot of hard work before they get anything growing just to encourage them. It seems to work.
Yes this year (our first) we has so much clearing weeding and construction work I think the other allotment holders took pity on us !! We had some lovely veg from them. It was so nice to taste what can be achieved:) Last week we had some beautiful potatoes and french beans given to us :)

We got ours from Chatsworth Farm Shop. OH asked a member of staff if he could have some, and was told that so long as he took them before the greengrocery delivery chap arrived, he was welcome to them ;D.
We tend to go there the last Saturday of the month (Bakewell Farmers' Market) followed by Chatsworth Farm Shop. If this is too far to travel, you may find that your local independent greengrocers are prepared to supply.

yes thankyou for the lovely sweetpeas shirl! gooooooorgeous! and the seeds and book too :) its deffinastely spurred me on, and with such tall grass and nettles and other spikey things growing its lovely to come home with a bunch of flowers i was on a high all week sniffing those and its made me determined to grow more and fill the plot with produce not weeds next yr! saying that i bet the buggery weeds beat me, but im going to give it a go anyways! tel tone i actually did some digging and weeding today! admittedly not cutting any new ground as such but still, it was progress!
n lol i get the inlaws 2 babysit the kiddies and they get veg after which they appreciate win win! its worked twice so far, but they looked worn out thistime, so i think i need to find another babysitter....
On our allotments, one of the plots is cultivated by 'young offenders' as part of their community service and the produce from this goes to a nearby sheltered housing scheme. The produce is taken there, usually twice a week, and the residents help themselves to what they want and make a donation to the local charity which they support, which this year is the 'air ambulance'.

I have a few elderly neighbours I pass stuff on to you and I agree, it's difficult to give it to some people for free. I've tried saying that I've got so much of whatever it is that I'll throw it away if they don't take it (and that may well be true) and to one lady I insist it is payment to her for feeding the cats when we are away as she won't take anything for that.
