Title: do you manure onions & garlic?
Post by: jonny211 on July 31, 2008, 13:24:37
Hi all,

I'm, wondering whether anyone manures their onion and garlic patch the autumn/winter before planting or would this make any emerging garlic too 'soft' for winter weather?

Cheers!

Jon

I top dress my onion sets and garlic cloves with about 2" of horse manure. Garlic is planted around the last week of October while the onions are planted mid Feb.

Maybe I'll give that a try, do you add this in the spring? My question came about as I'm wondering whether to use Blood, fish n' bone or manure to put back in what the garlic takes out. What I use for this will determine what follows the garlic once it's out.

Cheers!

I am preparing the ground where I am going to put my onions now, I will be applying leaf mould and manure and will turn it in about a week before planting, both garlic and onions will be planted towards the end of sept.

Hi jonny211,
Both onions & garlic are gross feeders. What you suggest is fine.
A light top dressing of BFB wouldn't do any harm next spring.
