Hi Gurus,
I've got a couple of old tyres that I would like use to grow strawberries. What is the best way of filling the tyres?
I was planning to use a mix of topsoil and compost but I've been advised that to use a compost/sand mix instead.
I have grown strawberries in containers this year and just used ordinary peat based potting compost.
They grew fine and cropped well and are in the process of sending out loads of runners at the moment.
My strawberry beds consist of a layer of manure in the bottom, with a mix of 3/4 soil and 1/4 compost mixed together. This was done when I first made the beds 2 years ago. I have not added anything since and have had fantastic crops in abundance both years.
hiya, drmullar, welcome to the site ;D
we use plenty of well rotted compost, topped up with ordinary soil for ours, bob flowerdew uses tyres for strawberry walls..
