see the sticks on the left look quite nice, so whats wrong with the sticks on the right??

They are past it.

Rhubarb picking time is about over now.You should leave some leaves on to strengthen the plant for next season.

Thanks Fork, I wondered if that was the case.
I have left about half the stems still there, so now I will leave those to die back. Next year I must pick sooner rather than later. When would be the latest sort of time to pick it?

Generally you should not pick your rhubarb after the end of July but I always stop at the end of June......and even then some of mine looked like yours,the ones on the right that is.
