Title: Size of sprouts now?
Post by: GrannieAnnie on July 27, 2008, 10:56:09
This is my first year for brussel sprouts. How big are the actual sprouts supposed to be by this point to have a decent Fall crop to pick? Having trouble with diamond back beetles on them and the whites haven't even emerged yet! :o

Ditto and although they are growing like mad, no sign of any actual sprouts yet. I'm hoping they appear at some point towards the end of the year. Otherwise I will have some lovely ornamental brassicas  :) but nothing to eat  :'(

My sprout plants are fairly tall and you can just see the starts of buds at the leaf/stalk joins which will become sprouts on my Diablo plants, Bedford Filasket same size but no real indication oof small sprouts at leaf joints yet.

They were sown early April and planted out in late May. I plant too species to spread the season - hopefully start cropping October and continue through to early March.

It is still too early for sprouts to be anywhere near there harvest stage just yet.  Some varieties will just be forming now while others may not be quite showing sprouts just yet.

Last year I grew Maximus as recommended by Tee Gee.  They were true to form and gave a huge harvest.  I also tried Bedford Fill Basket which produced loads too.  Come harvest time - both plants were full of huge sprouts all up the stalks.  Some plants were about 4ft tall, taller than my kids were! :o 8) :o 8)
