Evening all.
I know its a long shot, but does anyone know what species or name, those tiny little black spiders you find in gardens are called. Theyre less than 4mm in size, and i thought they were money spiders - looking at pictures on the interent though, im not so sure - any thoughts?
Thanks everyone!
We have about 17 spiders in Britain.......proably many more that have escaped from here and there ;D
House spiders are commonly black and so is the common wolfspider and the cave spider too.

Hmmmmmmm - think that might be a massive underestimate!
Quote# Spiders live in many different
habitats, there are even water spiders which live in ponds. There are 620 different British spiders. None of the spiders found in Britain are poisonous to humans and they can't hurt us.
Some can bite and be slighly poisonous too though - mainly down south!
In reply to the original post - there are a number of different money spiders (about 250 :o) so without more description or a photo, it will be hard to help further.
Looks like I need to get an updated British Wildlife book ;D
With regard to the spiders that bite, well they do, and it is only, fortunately for us, the fact that their fangs cannot pierce our skin so we are not injected with the venom, because the venom has been proven to be powerful enough to kill a human, also morepowerful than a lot of foreign spiders that are known as human killers.
I am very vigilant about all spiders, who knows which are native, and which are those that have come from other countries, via boat, plane or container lorry.
CONTROVERSIAL I KNOW!!!!!!!!
I'll have you know that there is a spider in the London area that can give an excruciating bite. It tends to hide in rockeries and normally eats woodlice.
Only when it can't take a chunk out of me.
And there's more than one type - there's a whole genus of Camden Bitey-spiders who have feasted off me for years.
I read an article on the BBC site a few weeks ago about British spiders that bite and imported (but resident) spiders that bite but cannot find the article now. There have been a few adverse reactions and there was a list of some of the more significant - no fatalities though!
Wow, i hadn't checked back on the thread. Thanks for all the replies. Think i've located what the few are that i was after. 8)
chirpy my big bloack rock chicken loves to eat spiders no matter what type they are !
We have a lovely little spider round here. It's quite small, doesn't seem to bother with a web, and jumps rather than runs. As I said it is quite small, dark with white blobs on it.
For arachnophobes a verse we used to quote is - If you want to live and thrive, let a spider run alive. ;D

One of these:

We get them too and I really like them - but I like all spiders.
No RC, the one we have is much smaller.
Is that a snail on the left above the spider? Looks like something out of Creature Comforts. ;D

Those zebra spiders are pretty small - under 1/4 inch.
the (a) nasty imported spider that bites is the woodlouse spider - one of the few spiders that can bite through a woodlouse shell, and also through our skin. I first saw a couple in my digs about 12 years ago and didn't know what they were, but there was a piece in New Scientist a couple of weeks after about them so I remembered them. Pretty spider. There was a few weeks correspondence in the magazine about how dangerous they were. Can't remember what the conclusion was. Live and let live I say
