Title: Sheds????
Post by: Tyke on July 21, 2008, 22:16:11
Our allotment site is quite new. Some have bought and put up new sheds and a few have used their old one from their garden. The allotment is 1 mile from our house and so we have to load up thew car and drive down - which can be a pain.

I think that sheds seem very expensive for what you get. Anyone suggest somewhere for a cheap shed? I have tried Freecycle to get a second hand one, but they go within seconds of being posted.

Or perhaps you don't have a shed and use something else? What would you feel safe about leaving on an alottment?

Patience and a big van is the key ;)

I got a 6x4 for £45 from Ebay - took about 6 months before one in the right area and for under £50 and for me to win the bidding.  It was in excellent condition and now in its 3rd year on the plot.  It has been vandalised, which has resulted in the glass being replaced with wire mesh and black plastic (on the basis that if they can't see in, they won't want to break in) ::) and the door frame/lock area has been metal plated to prevent the hasp being pulled off so easily.

In a few months, the big DIY chains generally have a couple of sheds that are "water damaged" and will often sell for a few pounds.

Or you could build one yourself from old pallets, this is a very popular option and normally pallets are very easy to get.

I contacted a local garden maintenance company, who would normally have to pay to dispose of shed on landfill. i asked if I could come and get the next one they have to get rid of. They were only too happy. Saved them a bit, i got me shed. Everyones a winner.  ;D

No way would i want to lug all my gear back and forth.

This is my old shed on my old allotment. In hindsight I should have bolted it together instead of using nails. It was made out of 14' pallets and cost me about £70 to build in total, including nails and felt etc.

Hi all,

If you are building a shed from scratch or just putting up a shed for tool storage you might want to build in a hidden space within the structure for storage of your best tools. A compartment or shed-within-a-shed as protection of your best stuff against thieves.

If all you want is somewhere to leave things like a fork, rake, hoe and spade then you could get a sheet of exterior plywood cut to size to make what is best described as a coffin like box.

Placed on a couple of old paving flags to raise it above the soil and put a pad bolt on top for security.

It wont cost much the frame need only be sawn 50mmX50mm timber.

Until I had cleared space for a shed, I used one of the large plastic garden storage chests.  Big enough to take rakes and hoes, hinged lid, can be padlocked, rollers on one end for easy moving around, weatherproof.  Think I paid around £50.  Maybe cheaper on eBay - haven't looked recently.   I've seen people using a similar one but it's made like a bench seat with a raised backrest, tools go in the seat.

I managed to get a shed free through patience from freecycle - I must have missed about ten before I was successful with this one. My friend also got a cheap one from ebay - as has been said previously it took a while to get one at the right price in the right area.

I think if you can build one (or some kind of storage) then great, if you really want a shed but don't want to build one then I would recommedn a big dose of patience and regular checking on ebay and freecycle.  :)

I just bought a metal shed from Argos for under £100, I found this cheap as it needs no maintenance costs each year for rot ect ect... well worth buying as old wooden sheds will cost you more eventually.
