Title: What is the most effective pidgeon scarer??
Post by: Duke Ellington on July 20, 2008, 10:17:35
Iam sure this must have been covered on here before but something must work!! Cd's are not working for me ~ I think the pidgeons get used to it being there! Ive tried tape and childrens windmills and even a personal attack alarm! The personal attack alarm deafens me and the pidgeon sits and stares at me!!

Short of tethering a cat on the plot, netting may be the only answer.

The chap on the plot next to me has tied a couple of roasting tins together, hanging together on his bean posts. They make a heck of a racket in the wind. He's thinking of putting some more up.

ill loan my kids out to you for bird scarying purposes, if they get near theyre food, theyre pretty deafening!! lol! were going to employ the kids to make bird scarers on a rainy day (am sure well get a few in the next 6wks) and will use old plastic drinks bottles and string and straws and tins ur apple pies come in and anything that might make a noise and move about, weve ,made a scarecrow too,  but ive netted the broccolie we were given, i think nets the only way... next yr if ive any spare cash ill be buying net and timber to make a frame with, bit of a big if mind you! but despite the plots being well populated by cats n foxes we still seem to have lots of bird damadge, grrr!!! theyre the reason ive got no peas or cabbages!!!! tho now netted theyre starting to recover but i fear its too late... sob... :'(

Scarecrows work, but they rely on something few of us practice, which is someone actually scaring the little blighters from time to time.

A scarecrow in a field is nothing to a bird, but if that bird has been repeatedly chased by humans then a scarecrow holds fear.

In the past farmers employed children to scare birds, that's why scarecrows worked in the absence of children, nowadays we stick jumpers on sticks and expect birds to be scared, though we have all seen them mingling happily with the washing on our lines.

I have seen a cut out of a hawk on a bendy flagpole, it moves about in the breeze. But as said before they need to be frightened off a few times too. I cant vouch for how effective the pretend hawk is.

a potato, with a few feathers stuck in it to represent wings and a tail, swinging on a string is effective!! ;D
