Title: Help appreciated re getting a new cooker please.
Post by: Jeannine on July 19, 2008, 18:27:11
I need to but a new cooker, my needs are....

Needs to be gas or dual with gas on top.

Needs a wok spot.

Stand alone.

Has to be minimum 90 wide as I want the extra wide oven, as this is almost the width of the oven as opposed to 60 which most are.

I don't want two ovens unless one of them is the big one, but # 1 need is the wide oven.

I would prefer not stainless steel but I doubt if there is a choice.

I am looking at Neff, Smeg and Baumatic, but I believe Delongi and Zanussi also do one.

I have been researching for some time now and would appreciate anyone who has the above  can give me their views.

So seeing as I can't have an Aga, I need to take really look around.

There is one in the Argos catalogue but I have been told it is rubbish, it is certainly very cheap compared to the above but as it was a kitchen shop that told me rather than a cook I will keep an open mind for now.

Thank you in advance.

Loved my Zanussi, now have a.......... ohh err missus I can't remember! but it has double ovens and a wok burner, plus a warming plate which I love!
Tis a big thing though!
The other thing I have had on my past 2 cookers, which I would hate to be without is the lid! Acts as another work surface, (BIG bonus) plus if the burner area is in need of a clean you can just pop the lid down and hide the mess when unexpected guests arrive! ;D
Oh its a belling!
like this one

Nice to see you back BTW! ;D

Thanks sweetie, but the ovens are too small on the double oven ones,I need one much wider oven. All mu US baking trays don't fit in Uk ovens and it takes so long to bake a big batch of cookies, my largest size cake tins don't fit either and my paells pans don't get in.

The ones I mentiones are as wie as US cokkers but I am not familiar with them.

Thank yoiu anyway,

Jeannine, try www.stoves.co.uk

We have a Stoves range/type oven, which we have had for about 10 years.  It has seven gas burners on the hob, including a wok burner.  It has two ovens, the larger of which is multi-function.  The smaller just a basic oven.

Having said that, we used to have a White-Westinghouse wall mounted double oven which went kaput.  I'd give my right arm to have that back.

I think you will struggle in the UK to find the cooker you are looking for.

Jeannine i agree with valmag the stoves Gourmet 1100 is brilliant so i dont see why the 900 in the same range should be  different

I recommended Neff because that's what we've got and they're very good quality. Though I'm sure there are others just as good.

But look at catalogues, rather than just showrooms. When we had our kitchen re-vamped a couple of years back we kept our double oven, but had a new hob. Having struggled for years with a basic 4-ring one, I wanted a larger one. In showroom after showroom we saw just one 5-ring version; then our kitchen designer showed us the latest catalogue and we had a choice of about a dozen! So I've now got a 6-ring hob with wok burner!

Currently shortlisting the Neff F3430, the Stoves 900DF, Baumatic pcg9110SS or the Alabama.

The stoves one quoted, the 1100, is too small.it is wider than most but then it loses the width by using it for two ovens side by side.

Valmarg, isn't a White Westinhouse an American make?

There is a Canadian one on the market here but it is £5500 and that I am not going to go for, the only reason it is expensive is because it is part gas and anything in Canada that is gas is 4 times the cost of electric ????

I have never fancied stainless steel which I know I will have to go for, whenevr I see one  in a kitchen it always looks dirty to me. Is there a secret to keeping it clean. I never have a problem with regular cooker services. Is the stainless always the matt finish.

Does anyone know anything about the Baumatics.

Thanks for the help so far.

I think Baumatic is an Italian make.

Yes White Westinghouse was an American make, but they used to be available in the UK.

Keeping stainless steel looking good, when you've cleaned it - baby oil on a duster and wipe all over the ss surface to coat with a thin film.  It's a tip I heard recently, and trust me - it works.  My cooker and extractor hood are stainless steel ;D ;D.

May I recommend Lofra cookers?

I bought their Maxmaxima 2 years ago (now superseded but replaced with similar) because I wanted a wide cooker - one that wasn't as wide as an Aga (not enough space and too expensive) but wider than the normal very narrow single-width British cookers (where it's almost impossible to use all 4 rings at once).

All their cookers are slot in - an absolute necessity as I'm in a rented house and I want to take it with me!

My choice was an all electric with a ceramic hob and single fan oven - approx 1.3 to 1.5x normal cooker width. Has various sized rings on top, including one extra large which I use for my jam pan. Stainless steel outer. No problems with it.

New models have come in a choice of gas or electric or dual fuel (so you can have your gas top and electric oven), and single or double ovens, or their professional range has 3 ovens.

A bit expensive and you have to hunt around around for a shop where you can have a poke at them. But in my opinion, worth it.

I'd go with the Neff F3430.

PG, thank you for the reply but the oven is too narrow, I need a much wider oven than the usual 50 or 60. I am not too concerned about the extra burner width, it is just the blooming oven that I need wider . I think the ranges with two side by side ovens are smashing but still have small ovens. I will check out the full range though

The Neff seems to be coming out on top at the ,moment, I really like the idea that it goes to the floor too, some of them don't and I think that is a wasted space. I will check the Neff 3430, thank you Mick.

Oh, and if you can get an oven with a complete enamel interior, so much the better.  The ovens that are advertised with a 'self clean interior' are no such thing.

Hi Valmarg, I was hoping to find one with a cleaning function on it but I have only seen it on the Canadian one  which was over £2000. It is a great feature for those who are not familiar.

When the thingy is turned to the clean cycle, a metal panel comes down over the glass panel in the door. and the oven door locks.

The heat goes to a very high level. much higher than anyone would use for cooking. When the cycle is over, the door will unlock and the metal panel can be lifted.

Anything stuck on the oven is just a pile of fine ash in the bottom that you vacuum out.

I used to collect old  metal bakeware, I would pop them in on a cleaning cycle and years of grunge would be burned off.

I haven't been able to find a cooker with this function here yet.

I agree with you Val, the self clean is no good at all.

Its a 'pyrolitic function'.  The Westinghouse I had had this function.

I have seen ovens advertised in this country with this function, but I can't remember the makes.  I'll have to have a look to see if I can find the magazines they were advertised in.

P.S. Just a thought, perhaps if you did a google search for pyrolitic ovens, you would get more information.
