Title: Walking Onions
Post by: Robert_Brenchley on July 19, 2008, 12:22:32
Anyone want any? I've got loads of the little bulbs from the tops of the stems. Start them off in pots, grow them on for two years, and then treat them like shallots.

I'd love some too Robert if you can spare them.  I hadn't heard about them until I read on here and I've wanted to try them since.  Will pm you too.

Awww, it's lovely to hear that they're On the Move..... 8) I'm presuming that these are 'babies' of the ones I sent you, Robert? If so, nice to read that they're Orl Grown Up & doing their Thang.... :)

Should anyone else want bulbils, and if Robert's supply has come to an end, please PM me.....I've loads.

PS my walking onions come with a Warning.....I once sent a jiffybag of new 'onions' (not bulbils) to Mikey.......he, in time, thanked me for = 10+ leeklet plants, 2 or 3 walking onion plants and, oh! lots of protein-on-the-hoof which blinked into the sunshine when he opened the bag before scarpering.......

......but if you still want some..... :) :) :)

Send me a PM with your address; I should be able to post them all on Monday. Yes, they are yours, Alishka. I've bulked them up to the point where I can plant all the big bulbs, and have a nice bed of them for next year. So far the biggest bulbs are about three inches across, and after the dismal results I've had in the past with shallots, it's quite a change.

Hiya Loops! Will be lovely to meet up with you - some time :-\ - but with this weather I'm having to work when I have to, rather than when I want to, so I've not had a Saturday free for ages to get over to Erdington. Fingers crossed for Sat after next, or sommat....got a NEED to scrump some of Shirl/Tone's horse muck - and also to eat the Best Fish and Chips in N.Brum (oh! and meeting you and the kiddies will be nice, too ;))

Onions...I've still got bulbils, despite posting off about 30-40 biggies this morning to LBB!, so if you haven't ordered from Robert, why not PM me your addy & I can get some in the post to you on Wednesday?

I plant differently from Robert. Figured that as the bulbils naturally are wanting to fall off to the ground, that's where I'd plant them straight off. So that's what I did/do, in a designated bed, and they always seem to oblige.

Cheers!

I would love some to try and so would my friend.  When I first read about walking onions everone thought I was mad, mind you they all thought that when I accidentally ended up with an allotment

Please let me know how much the postage is.

Thanks

No problem, as long as I can remember to bring them back tonight! I've sent everyone else's off, meanwhile PM me your address. It's probably best to mollycoddle them a bit in pots for the first winter. Two years ago, I planted them in an open bed, and they survived perfectly well. Last winter, almost all the bulbils I had in died, and I was left with the bigger bulbs.

......was that because it was particularly wet last winter, Robert & they rotted off? Can't remember.....actually, can't remember a time when it didn't rain, but hey-ho! summer starts tomorrow (or Thursday :-\) if the MetMen are to be believed... :D

I think it was because of the wet, I can't think of anything else. A lot of things were hit; my Dracunculus really got hammered.
