Title: How do they do that?
Post by: ceres on July 18, 2008, 21:23:45
I was scanning through my new emails tonight and there was a spam one

From: VIRGIN
Subject: Inside Steve Job's Brain

I happened to glance at the message text in the preview pane:

Gardeners across Britain are reaping a bitter harvest of rotten potatoes, withered salads and deformed tomatoes after an industrial herbicide tainted their soil

Co-incidence or fiendishly clever targetting?

My business partner is Anglo-Indian, and keeps getting spam for Indian porn... they know something!

I've had loads of the Steve Jobs brain one, and also variations of the rotting veg - they come in waves, in a week or so something else will be in the subject line. I hardly bother reading the titles now, I've very good at scanning through hundreds (sometimes) of spam.  That's the problem of having an international business.

I get loads from Russia  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Do you use Mozilla Thunderbird for your email, if you train that properly it will weed out a lot of the spam.

If you have an ISP address or widely advertised address you will get a lot of spam. An address which is not widely known will not attract much. Most of my addresses are used for widely advertised purposes, but two of them are not widely known and never get any spam.

I have a business, with a website in six languages. Yes, I use a filter, but sometimes things get classed as spam when they are not, hence there is always the need to check. I am very good at it now. I get fewer than half a dozen spam per day in my own personal inbox.

You drop cookies off wherever you go - enter your email address on every site you register with - you are easily targetted.  There is of course the scatter spam - like I need to enlarge my manhood, correct erectile dysfunction or last longer ::) ;D
