Title: Lettuce.
Post by: telboy on July 16, 2008, 22:44:20
I give up.
I started late due to problems.

1) Outside seedlings pecked out by blackbirds!

2) Sparrow inside greenhouse - pecked all seedlings.

Back to Tesco - innit?

I have a glut!

My other half demanded salad this year - something I have always avoided - so we now have the opposite to you Telboy, 6 types of lettuce, plus radicchio and chicory.

I would rather have grown more swedes and parsnips.

Oh, and rocket...

Give it one more try. Get a flower pot and half fill it with compost, put a small pinch of seeds thinly on top and cover with a little more compost.

Then put a little plastic bag over the top propped up with wood skewers (to form a tent).

When the seedlings come through, separate each into their own pots.

Plant out, hiding them under taller plants.

or

You can make a 'cats cradle' with string over them tied to canes If you can't find a suitable plant to grow them under.

The birds wont go near because they wont stay on the ground anywhere that they can't quickly fly off from.
