Title: Any point trying to grow chillies now?
Post by: shaolin101 on July 15, 2008, 15:41:57
Hi all,

Just wondered if it would be worth trying any chilli plants at this late stage. Tried some earlier in the year and they didn't even germinate. The weather is heating up at last but is there enough time?

I dont have a green house though so they would be outside.

Thanks

If you overwinter them, they'll be great for next year...

all you have to lose is a few seeds so if you dont mind losing a few seeds i would say go for it worse come to the worse you can over winter them as before mentioned  ;D

Yeah - suppose i may as well try.

If they start to grow but nothing comes of them how would i overwinter them/stop them dying?

Thanks
Liam

i guess depending on how big the plants are they could be overwintered on a window sill i would think someone with more knowledge will be along soon

You can keep them on the windowsill over winter. Dead simple, no special needs just watering. You'll probably get some chillis through the winter then by spring you can start to feed them with tomato feed and away you go. I have a chilli plant which is 6 years old now!  Give the flowers a little tickle to help fertilisation. Oh and red spider mite can be a problem so a misting with water every so often is not a bad idea.

Thanks,

I will give it a try - most plants tend to die in my house though!

I think it's a good idea to sow them now for next year. They just look so sorry for themselves when you sow them in Jan-Feb

Mine were sown on 25th March and the first chillies are ready for picking on 5th July 112 days later.

That means you are looking at November, which is OK if you bring them inside the house, possibly earlier as they will now get off to a good start.

Definitely!  I've just started some more of one variety.

Every year I grow them, especially Jalapenos. This year I was all geared up for doing different things with them - pickling, drying  etc, and was particularly looking forward to trying home-made Jalapeno Poppers with the cream cheese filling. As I understand they can be deep fried, I even bought a brand new deep fat frier.

Well, my chillies have finally taken off - at last! - some are in flower, others putting on a decent bit of growth and it looks like I'll have a good crop in the end. And do you know, from forty plants of various varieties...

not one of them is a Jalapeno.
