Title: any ideas?
Post by: spudgun on July 12, 2008, 14:28:11
I recently put a bag of home compost outside and a load of things sprouted from it. Can anyone identify these?

Marrow pumpkin, courgette, squash, gourd
any of the above I once had one grow on my compost heap and it was a throw back light yellow with illuminious green stripes so if you can leave and you could get a nice syrprise!!! ;D

I get these all over my plot, in my case pumpkins from the giant one in my picture, I put all the scraped out contents including the seeds into my compost bin in Oct 2006 and they pop up all over the place.

Thankfully they are easy to pull up and are therefore harmless.

Sorry I'm a complete amateur which you can probably tell but is there any reason I can't just keep these and grow them fully?

hiya, spudgun, welcome to the site  ;D
we currently have growing from our home made compost:-
sunflowers, tomato seedlings, parsnips and coriander, I'm leaving a few to see if they'll grow or be eaten by the snails  ;D

Hello and welcome Spudgun,

I had lots of marrow seedlings coming up in my compost too last year. I let one grow on. The resulting marrow was awful. But you may have more luck, you wont know if you dont try :D ;)

I wouldn't bother personally - unless you have space you're not using for anything else... or just like the look of the plants!
