Title: Mystery pea
Post by: growmore on July 10, 2008, 20:34:16
Does anyone know what sort of peas these are ? I found em growing  beside some cabbage on the edge of the plot.
I think they have germinated from the sweepings from the loft ..SO they could be a type of pea used in Pigeon corn/feed  I think.
I just wondered if anyone knew the name .

That is a really handsome, healthy looking plant, unfortunatelay I neither have any or a clue!
However a trawl of google produced the following-

Seeds from coloured-flowered peas are dark in colour and contain tannins. In the EU they are rarely used as dry peas for animal feed, except in Germany where they are considered hardy. When cut before maturity, coloured-flowered varieties are used as forage for ruminants

Usually pigeon feed contains Canada Peas, Maple Peas and Austrian Winter Peas. I can't find pics of the plants but there are pics of the peas which you could use to id them after you harvest them here:

It is a New Zealand Maple pea as suggested by Baccy Man which is mainly used in pigeon mixes.
