Title: potatoes. have i missunderstood
Post by: littlebabybird on July 06, 2008, 21:46:46
ok i planted my potatoes in a valley and covered them in soil, fed them watered them and earthed them up when the leaves came out, keeping a little bit of leaf showing. i think thats what i was meant to do.

soo i dugup 3 plants today,
near the surface is a potato yes just one on each plant, then a stem going down to a little shrivled one which i have taken to be the seed, but arent there supposed to be more potatoes on the stem bit?

Really yes,how long have they been in the ground, are they earlies?

I had some plants with no spuds at all :)

I've had poor yields this year.

Make sure you dig around a bit, sometimes the spuds form a little way away from the plants on thin roots that snap off as you lift the plant.

Do you know what the variety is?  Are they meant to be earlies or lates?   This could make a difference depending upon when they were planted.

Yes - there are meant to be more - bur not just on the stem. They grow on the long dangly bits & can be a foot away from the stem. Even in the next row!

Very disappointing.
