Title: New Allotment
Post by: grandmaibb on June 30, 2008, 08:45:15
Goodmorning All

I have just taken on an allotment on a new private site. The plot I have was taken by a lady who had it skimmed in January and then has done nothing with it since. It was covered by prickly sow-thistles and creeping buttercup. I pulled up all of the thistles but my question is ; if I rotivate the creeping buttercup will it spread like couch grass?

i would not rotavate till it was dug first anyhow and if you got to dig first then there wouldnt have any weeds anyhow as the would be pulled out whilst i was there no point rotavating hard soil your only touching the crust then

hiya, grandmaibb, welcome to the site  ;D
when we took our plot on, we marked everything out, covered the paths and worked on the beds areas one at a time, the rest we covered with anything we could find, hope you get it sorted,

It's shallow-rooted, but it is capable of coming up again after being buried, as long as it's not too deep. You might get rid of some of it, but most will probably recover. Your best bet is to get rid of the buttercups first, then rotavate. Watch out for seedlings. You have to be really ruthless with the stuff.

Thanks Robert, I sort of thought that it would be a bit of a beast to get rid of but I thought I would ask. I will just have to 'encourage' my boys to come an d give me a hand with the digging.

At least you haven't got couch grass or brambles.

Welcome to the site.  :D
