Lovely. Wish I'd grown some.
Lovely. I really enjoy walking up the garden and getting the scent of my few sweet peas.
pretty colours, bet they smell 'special' ;D
Beautiful and they look so large!
Question: do all sweetpeas smell alike or are they like roses. Mine smell a bit like lily of the valley.
wow theyre pretty, mine are just avout getting going... slow and steady im hoping!
Layered mine over the last few days and they are ready to go up the sticks again. Have to wait a couple of days for the stems to staighten out again
Lovely jesssands.
Good question GrannieAnnie I assumed they were to a greater or lesser degree the same scent ,you have made me think so when I am up the plot next I'll find out.
oooh shirl if i get down there between now n the weekend im popping down for a nose, both to sniff them and to see the layering, ive got 2 white flowers out in the pots out front at home and 2 pink out the back, smell much the same 2 me and different varietys, do i pick the flowers (for a vase !!!) theyr on nice long stems or leave them? i want as many flowers as poss being a greedy piggy and for them to last as long as poss too... ok 2 stems isnt exactly a vase full but if it encourages more growth? will be feeding them again now the rains stopped, baby bio as thats whats handy, lol, hope they like it!!!! and i think the neighbours appreciate my efforts, however poor, lol, whenever im in the kitchen and someone walks past they always look at my flowers, hopefully its the flowers and not the crappy pots theyre in, but the crappy pots are deliberate... wont get nicked then, or so the theory goes... (a neighbour woke up one am to find her terracotta pot filled with flowers in the rd, it was a lovely pot and lovely flowers, i guess it was just 2 heavy n they dropped n smashed it, grrrrr!!!)
anyways looking forward to sniffing youre sweet peas shirl!!! glad to see theres some flowers left after the layering which ill admit to e more than curious about :)
I have grown sweet peas for the first time this year, I will try and get some photos on later this week, wished I had time to layer them and grow them correctly, but must say I have fell in love with them.

GrannieAnnie,I asked my mate up the plot about scent his reply was that Spencers do smell the same but others are different due to breeding.
Loopyloulou........................If you want lots of flowers, keep picking them for your vases or they just set seed then will finish flowering sooner.
If you want you can leave a few flowers on towards the end of the season for your seeds next year ;)
Hi shirlton
What do you mean by layering? - Mine are just a big tangle up my canes, nowhere near as neat as yours.
Growing on the cordon means that all the plant's energy is concentrated into producing better flowers and growth of the single branch. This means that your plants will soon reach the top of your canes. You will then need to 'layer' them. Do not confuse this with propagation – all this means is to drop your plants down to the bottom of the canes so that they can grow up again. You may need to do this more than once during the season. The easiest way to layer is to undo the ties and gently lie your plants horizontally along the rows. They will naturally turn upwards in a day or two and you can then tie them in to the nearest cane and continue as before. You may choose to tie train them up a cane further along the row straight away. Take care not to snap the plant as they can be very brittle. Choose a warm day and make any bends gradual.
Hope this helps. Its taken from the website How to grow Sweet Peas by the National Sweet Pea society
consider those flowers picked in the morning! they smell lurvely, i spent ages picking the greenfly off them and ended up locked out but i suppose i did spend lots of time sniffing them, lol, oops! id run n nip them now but its raining... shirl come rain or shine im kid free for a few hrs 2morrow so ill be down trying 2 get some stuff done, where to start!?!?! maybe the sweetpeas at the plot will have flowered.... theyll be coming home if they have :)
hmmm, interesting maybe I will try layering next year
I've grown some sweet peas too this year for the first time!!!
