Title: Lime
Post by: PurpleHeather on June 22, 2008, 22:17:44
Does any one still use it ?

It used to be like snow on the fields at one time but now no one seems to bother with it

Oh, I love a bit of lime, so I still use it. Put it on where I plan to grow brassica's the following year.

Its used loads in my area on farmland! Each field gets done every 2-3 yrs depending on the ph of the soil

As already mentioned I use it, and I consider an essential ingredient to keep my soil at the right pH thus improving my chances of success.

My applications fits in with my rotation programme i.e. it is applied on all beds that will contain brassicas, which effectively means my plots are fully limed every 3 to 4 years.

Whereabouts are you, Purpleheather? I never use it, but if I was on more acid soil I would.

Not at Oxford, since you're already on a limestone soil. That's what I'm thinking of; lime is only going to be needed with acid soils. Whereabouts in Oxford are you? I grew up in East Avenue, and my father had a plot on a site next to Headington Hill Park.

The soil was predominantly clay where I was brought up. The farmer across the road grew cereals and rape (which I helped sow and harvest).  He used to lime each Autumn.

I used to know Meadow Lane ever so well. My sister once found a puppy dumped in a cardboard box in the fields there; people had been finding puppies for days apparently, so someone must have abandoned a litter. She grew into a lovely dog. It was on the route the school used for cross-country runs, but I was always among the walkers in the rear.
