Title: Fatsia Japonica
Post by: Blista on June 22, 2008, 15:15:01
Hi All,
I'm looking for information on how to prepare and grow Fatsia's from seed. I've spotted a few on my way to work and wondered what i have to do to get them to germinate. Anybody got any ideas?

???

Thanx Biscombe,
I'd hoped to find out a bit more about actually getting the seeds to germinate - i've now collected LOADS! The things i've read online are contradictory, so wondered if anyone had one growing in their garden?

Thanx again though ;D

EUREKA!
Having conducted a number of carefully monitored experiments, I managed to germinate the seeds of Fatsia J. thus :

1.  Gather the berries

2.  Soak them for 2 days in water

3.  De-pulp them - they're pretty mushy, just gently rub them between thumb &      forefinger - inside you will find 3 or 4 little seeds (size of tomato seeds but fatter)

4.  Scatter the seeds on top of a pot of soil

5.  Sprinkle a very small amount of soil on top

6.  Water well - keeping soil surface moist

7.  Put into a propagator or put a bag over the pot

8. Leave on a sunny windowsill or similar

9.  Wait a couple of weeks (sown 16/06 - 2 seedlings emerging today - 02/07)

I'm elated (first time trying to grow 'found' seed - i'm soooo proud  :) )
im off to treat the rest in the same way - wish me luck!
;D
