Title: Drying out shallots
Post by: ladybizzy on June 20, 2008, 16:33:24
A quick question.....Have never grown shallots before, some are ready and I've pulled them, so  now I'm wondering if they will be all right drying out in the greenhouse, or is it too hot for them? I did have a covered area where I dried stuff out, but it's gone this year and thought the shed might be a bit dark and dank  :)

Haven't lifted mine yet but the back shelf of the big greenhouse does a great job!  ;D

Ours are ready, varying sizes.

Do I need to pull them all out now and dry to store, or can I leave in ground for time being and pull as I need them for the dinner?

SHELLE
I would recomend you pull them, if you leave them in the ground they are liable to start growing again and split leaving you with something you cant eat.

PS wish I had room in the greenhouse to dry mine out, I found if you dried them out in the greenhouse you dont have to mess about soaking them in salt water before you pickle them as they have less moisture because of the heat in the greenhouse.

Hang them in bunches against the house/shed/garage wall and they will dry out quite nicely, particularly if you have a protected wall and wide eaves.
