Title: When to cut white cucumbers
Post by: Lee Marshall on June 18, 2008, 13:23:36
I have 2 really strong white cucumber plants (T&M long white) which are both carrying fruit.  I cut one last week at around 5 inches long but it was still rather firm fleshed and had a peppery taste, not unpleasant but not what I expect from a cucumber.

Trouble is I don't really know when to collect and what to expect..any help most welcome.

Apparently cucumbers vary depending upon variety.  7-12"

Not familiar with that one, I do White Wonder, Boothby's Blond and Crystal apple.. I cut them as I see them or want one... only when they develop strong orange streaks have they gone too far!

Varieties do vary. I had no idea that there was any thing else other than the long green ones in shops.

On our allotments members have all shapes and sizes of cucumbers long , short. Some are thick others thin.

Not being a cucumber lover, I can not comment on flavour but I am told by those who will eat a whole one like it was an apple, that there is a difference in the taste and texture of each variety.

best to get an all female cucumber producing variety as the male cucumbers are bitter.

I can hear all the female forum members laughing and agreeing with this  ::)

Crystal Apple is a lovely round variety with great flavour.
