I've decided, and it's official, I'm going to buy a water butt ;D
So, can anyone tell me, are they easy to connect? My drain pipe is upvc and it's square ::)
Will I have problems fitting it to a square drain pipe?

You just need to make sure you buy a diverter like this one (http://www.screwfix.com/prods/27866/Plumbing/Black-Square-Rainwater-Guttering/Rainwater-Diverter-Black-70mm?cm_mmc=GoogleBase-_-Datafeed-_-Plumbing-_-Rainwater%20Diverter%20Black%2070mm) which fits both round & square downpipes.
They are very easy to connect. Check with your water company and/or council to see if there are any offers on waterbutts you can often get them considerably cheaper than in the shops.
If my old man can do it anyone can ;D and I'm sure you can buy connecting kits for square down pipes in most diy shops. You can also get linking kits so you can use as many water butts as you have room for from one pipe.
the basic link kit suits both square and round down-pipe. HINT tidy up any cut edges of plastic pipe, otherwise fluff and hair etc gets caught and eventually blocks the pipe ( my father was a plumber, and often called out to sort out drainage issues, this was most common problem) ;)

OK, at the risk of sounding totally thick, how are they connected? Do I have to saw the drainpipe in half and then fit the connector between the two halves?

If you have a look on the evengreener web site under water butts, they have a video on how to connect etc. My OH fitted 2 butts together used the video & found it easy. Enough said.

I've bought a water butt from Wilko's, £9.99 and the same again for a stand. I've only bought a small one as it's going on the drain from the porch. Just got to find a fixing kit for a square drain pipe now.
