Title: Sign of slugs on my beans and peas
Post by: chappy on June 10, 2008, 19:57:16
Only planted my beans out the other day and already the slugs have had a go at the leaves of runner and french bean and also spoted they have had a go at the sugar snap peas.

Last year I delayed in getting pellets down and then regretted in when the growing shoot got ate out of a couple.

Point is that I now know that pellets while good to kill them, are also an attractant.  So should I hold fire or go for it with the pellets?

With a couple fo days showery weather coming up, they will have the perfect conditions to attack.

What do you recommend I do?

The pellets i have are the "growing Success" ones that have had rave reviews on this site.

Regards,

Chappy.

Well chappy, you have to decide on whether you want a crop, or whether you are happy to let the slugs/snails beat you to it.

I'm not happy using chemicals on anything we eat, but a few slug pellets wouldn't be unacceptable.  IMHO ;D.

Like valmarg says, are you growing for the slugs or for yourself?  I find the best time to pellet is when you first plants things out.  Once they get established, they can tolerate a bit of damage but young plants can get stripped bare in a few hours.

Yep, buggers, a bit more damage last night and they had a go at a courgette too.

I don't like killing things, but it's them or me!  If I spot a snail then I usually put it in my wheely bin to find it's way to the landfill.  You would think the slugs would be happy with the contents of my compost bin as that's where they all seem to live. :)

I read the pack for the pellets and it does in fact say to use at first sign of damage to crops.

And rather than place a circle around plants to just randomly scatter.

I'll sort it tonight.

Think these are organic so no "chemicals" so to speak.

Doh!  I put slug pellets down last night.

Went and checked on them this morning and one of my runner beans has had the growing tip eaten of it.

Not happy with the  leaves he just had to eat the tip! :)

When will I learn! :(

Ah well it will grow more shoots and I'm sure I'll get something off it.

Hope the greedy bugger ate some pellets too!
