I have only just found out i have an allotment... not seen it yet!
What is the best thing to grow first?? My mum says to plant potatoes as they will clear the soil?!! is she talking nonsense or is this the case?? I am a complete gardening/allotment beginer at the tender(!) age of nearly 46!
A novice myself but I think it may be too late for you to plant any spuds, unless there's a really late maincrop somewhere, but I'm pretty sure you'll find it difficult to get any seed potatoes at the minute. Your mum is right, all the digging and earthing up and stuff will help your soil no end, although I wouldn't say it would clear it necessarily. If you have a search around on site, I think someone put a list up somewhere of things that you could plant now. If all else fails try and get some plug plants of stuff as well. But most of all - enjoy! ;D
Firstly, congratulations - very exciting!
It depends on what the place is like, how much time you have, how much space you have and what you like to eat...
Mum's right in general bit it's a bit late - having said this, I saw loads discounted in homebase last week & would give it a shot. I'd get some salad in, you could be eating them in a month. I'd also do beetroots, raddish and possibly carrots. Oh, and chard
Plenty of time to buy & plant brassica, leeks, possibly tomatoes and squash or pumpkin would be brilliant as they cover a hugs space for not much digging... if you can find some for sale.
Either way, don't try digging too much at once, relax, have fun and remember it's a marathon, not a sprint.
Welcome Olicat.
I don,t think you should worry about what you can grow till you have seen the allotment.
Its a bit late to set most thing away apart from Spring Cabbage and fast growing crops but the bright side is you have the rest of the season to get your garden done the way you want it.
