Title: mosaic virus
Post by: gordonsveg on June 09, 2008, 19:57:30
A lot of my toms have pale green patches with a marbley look to them(the leaves that is) is this the virus???, i have heard it can be cured with epsom salts but at what strength please?
Also has anyone grown cabbages in the "freebie flower pots" with any success please? I dont have a lot of space left and i can move them around as needed.

I don't think much can cure mosaic virus, I had it on my squash 3 years ago, had to pull them up and burn the plants  :( It would be useful if you could post a picture before you take drastic action!

Biscombe is right, you can't cure a virus - once a plant has a virus it will always have it, they don't have immune systems like animals.
If someone has advised you to use epsom salts on your tomatoes, they may think the plants are suffering from a deficiency of magnesium.  It seems a bit early for them to be suffering from magnesium deficiency, but then I'm assuming they aren't very big yet (like mine  ;D). It tends to show itself as yellowing between the veins of the leaves - so the veins look greenish, and also the edges of the leaf do, but the bit inbetween looks yellowish.
Don't know where you've been growing them, but mine have some patches of scald on them where the sun has caught them, they'll survive, hope it's just this on yours.

Thanks Biscombe and Jennym for your replies, I am growing them in the big black pots, in the G/H and outdoors. The mixture is a mix of old and new compost, usualy the cheapest i can get.   It looks as if i mixed up mosaic with magnesium def. Been growing toms for a few years now but never met it before.Hence the "smilies".
                What dose is used please?

        P.S.
Has anyone grown brassicias in pots? If so what were the results please.

There should be instructions on the pack of Epsom salts, but generally think its about a tablespoonful to a gallon of water.
Haven't tried brassicas in pots myself.
