How long do you soak them for to do kebabby-type things on a barbie?

At least 30 minutes but longer won't hurt.

You mena they have another use than just keeping pigeons off the lottie and cats out of my salad tubs ;D

Yes they have other uses, you can support small house plants (like orchid stems) by using them as canes.

Put self adhesive address labels on them (folded to form flags and names written on the labels) at the edges of rows of seeds, or in plant pots.

If you are really artistic and have some thin paper and glue then they will make great cross pieces for small kites.

I have even seen them used as tooth picks, book marks and shoved into cakes to stop the protective covers touching the whipped cream.

What exactly is a kebabby by the way?
