Title: Cut and come again lettuce
Post by: robkb on June 09, 2008, 11:44:28
Hi all,

Some of my lettuce looks like it might be about to bolt. As I've been eating it as a cut and come again crop, will it still be okay to do this if it does start flowering?

Cheers,
Rob ;)

we even eat the flowers, the stem gets a bit hard but the leaves are ok, same with chinese leaves  :)

Thanks for that. Wasn't sure if it might have made the leaves go too bitter or tough, but soulds like I can keep munching for a while yet!

Cheers,
Rob ;)

just watch if it's red mustard, the leaves go hotter the bigger they get  ;D

Nope, just Seeds of Italy mixed lettuce - very nice, very prolific and as tough as old boots. It's already survived excess rain, snow, frost, heat, and me generally ignoring it! And enough seeds in the packet to feed most of my street!

Cheers,
Rob ;)

yes i find lettuce difficult. Maybe a shelter for it is a good idea? I thought of putting up a shaded area for my lettuce and salad goodies but haven't got around to it...

I've got some Red salad bowl at the baby leaf stage and had some as my first crop the other night.

Had those along with baby leaf rocket and Lollo Rosso with a simple dresssing and it was lovely.

Have to say I can't really tell you what it tatses of as it was mixed in.  I'll have a nibble on a leaf tonight and give you my verdict. :)

At the baby leaf stage I thing the flavour is quite mild for all types.

Got some Lollo Rosso growing nicely on my plot.  How big should I let it get before I cut some for use ?

kendy, it depends if you want a big lettuce or leaves, you can cut or pick some leaves as you need them, we just pick lettuce as we want them, whatever size they are, hope this makes sense  ;D
